EK9 sound deadening

So i've recently bought myself an EK9, was cleaning the carpets yesterday and pulled it aside on the drivers side and noticed i've got sound deadening tar on the floor pan, but only on the drivers side.

Was just wondering if anyone else has this as it must've been fitted at the factory as it's identical to the stuff that was in my EK4.
 
Yeah it's normal to have a patch of it on the driver side front floor.
 
Both of mine had it, both pre face 97's though so could of been phased out on later cars
 
My old one didn't have it, new one did iirc
Both prefacelift 98s.
 
I was curious when I noticed it in mine too but found out it was normal. It's a 98 pre facelift.
 
Mine is a prefacelift 97. I was under the impression they didn't have any at all.
 
Yeah I didn't think the ek9 had any at all when I bought mine and I was wondering why it had a random patch of it on the drivers side ha But I looked into it and I realized that quite a number of ek9's came with it but I have no idea why it's in some ek9's and not others.!
 
Mines a 1997 and it has the small patch of it in the drivers footwell.
 
Mines a 98 and it also has a small patch near the door on the drivers side.
 
They've all got it on the carpet aswell.
Underside has like a Matt stuck underneath.
