just came across "dry sump setup" when looking around the internet

anyone no why these are used and wats the advantages over normal oil in sump job?

just curious is all

I've always wondered as well what it means and why?

Dry sump systems are only really needed when running full slicks otherwise sump baffles are fine. Without going into mega detail and to put it simply a dry sump kit uses power from your engine (off your crank using a belt usually) to physically propel the oil around your engine at a constant high pressure which will not be effected during high G corners. If you can imagine as you go round a long right hand bend all your oil will be force up against the left side which can result in oil starvation and low oil pressure, which you know aint good :). I have had a look into accusumps which seem to be more cost effective. They do the same thing but use an electrical motor which will kick in when it senses high G or prolonged G to keep a steady oil pressure.

A regular oil pump does that doesn't it? :p

A dry sump removes the 'pan' in which oil collects and replaces it with an oil tank which can be mounted remotely. The oil is actively sucked out of the flat sump pan, de-airated (sp) and pumped into the deep and narrow tank. The oil can then be pumped out of the bottom of the tank back to engine, and no amount of lateral G will uncover the pickup so you suffer no loss of oil pressure in high G corners.

Other benefits are being able to lower the engine in the chassis, increased oil cooling capacity and running negative crank case pressure.

It's expensive, definately a race car only thing.

so the sump is actually empty!

you dont seem many out there with it

Lol yeah what Kozy said. I am just crap at explaining things and forgot the key bit about the pick up being constantly maintained with oil due the remote oil tank it uses.

ive always wondered how you dip a car with a dry sump

New corvettes and high end porsche's use dry sump setups. expensive and adds weight with all the extra oil needed, but nice if you can afford that. not really needed on our street setups, maybe track but not used a ton from what I have seen on civics.
