DIY CTR Headlights

Ok on my headlights i have on the car what i did was take them apart, remove all amber reflectors- and painted the chrome part a gunmetalish color. It came out nice but now my headlights have a crack and it leaks. My friend is giving me a set for free and i recently noticed that the real ctr headlights dont have that chrome bulb cover. I was thinking about shaving this part off on the new headlights- but im worried about the way the light pattern will be affected. anybody understand what im trying to do? I dont understand why the real ctr headlights show the bulbs- and the non ctr headlights have a lil "hat" haha.

i understand, i too wondered how that would affect light output, do it and let us know post pics of the progress so far
