Does anyone know of or use any decent MX5 forums.

There seems to be hundreds of them but most are not that usefull. Just need one with some decent tech info on what swaps here and there and decent factual info.

Thanks

I second that! Used to go on a lot before buying my 5. Decent site fo' shizzle.

Nutz is OK, but a bit lacking in proper tech IMO. Miata.net is the Honda-Tech of the MX5 world. :nice:

As for swaps, the KLZE is the daddy IMO. Yes, the V8s are epic, but the V6 is perfectly suited and keeps it all Mazda. :D

Yea noticed Nutz was a little lacking in proper tech, is not to bad though.

Miata.net is pritty good, mx5oc.co.uk has a good bit of UK and Jap specs etc and mx5cartalk.com has the odd usefull bits of info.

Might have myself a Black Supercharged 1.6 NA6 190hp, going to check it out if the snow is clear after weekend.

There are so many bloody different models and chassis updates to look out for. Glad I got some reading done before just buying one that seemed in good nick. Preferably I wanted one like yours Koz 94-95 1.8 as thats when the early ones got most of the decent updates along with the 1.8, in fact your one would have been perfect, especialy being a UK. But if this S/C one is decent I may aswell pick it up. Parts are always sellable to fund other upgrades.

Cheers for the help guys.

Yea I was lucky to get mine, especially with the Torsen. Suspect it's had a few sneaky tweaks too as she pulls hard right up to the redline when apparently the 1.8s usually don't reward that kind of driving... :D

Get some pics up of your beasty, she sounds like fun.

I am having SO much fun in mine it is unreal, I never thought such a low powered car could be so entertaining! :nice:

Haven't gone to view it yet. Or even seen pic's. Just had a mate contact me sayin his boss has one in his garage just taxed and is selling. Kind of a random coincidence as I was asking around and turns out he's after a Pulsar, wanted a straight swap but I have just stuck a load more money and time into that so the Gti-R is a keeper for now. Always wanted a proper line up of cars of all types. True the Pulsar is not the most driver/chassis focused 4WD but will have to do. Not forking out for an Evo and no way I can have another Impreza.

All I know is I saw a mint Black one with a S/C that was about the roads Year or 2 back and Im hoping its the same one. Not that many on the Island especially not Black and S/C.

Don't know whats wrong with me I just want to own every cult/classic/cool/drivers car I see. Just so that I can build them as I want and keep them. Even looking into barn storage for all my car and spares.

Yeah I have wondered the difference between the 1.6 and 1.8. Most seem to say the 1.6 is a far sweeter engine. But then you get others praising the 1.8 to be just enough power. I am worried on how much it will drink the juice. With the way fuel price is going, by the time I get back driving it will be nearer £2 a liter :nerv:

Will be looking into small turbo setups I think anyway. Might even be able to get better MPG than N/A. Certainly better than S/C :nono:

That's an enviable goal mate, I wish I could get away with keeping all my cars, but my current 'fleet' of MX5 and ATR is serving me quite well, even if the ATR is predominantly the wifes car!

I think the issue between the 1.8 and 1.6 is similar to the B16B and B18C, if you increase the capacity without changing the head or cams, then the engine is trying to breathe more air through the same size apature, which is obviously going to strangle it a bit more at higher revs! (As is usual, I have a method of modelling this relationship for the B series... :nice:) Seems it can be resolved very easily on the 1.8s with the Exhintake cam swap though, which is what I suspect mine may have had done.

Fuel consumption ain't great TBH, I'm getting about 25mpg where the ATR will do 27s, you can blame an inefficient, low compression engine, primative ECU and shocking drag co-efficient for that I think. Luckily my mate with a SC'd one said the fuel consumption didn't suffer that much when he did his, he just got a bit more for his money!

I thought the 1.8 engine were a different engine as such. As head, manifolds etc don't inter change as the 1.8's cylinders are wider and further apart. Think they gained most of the extra cc in bore than in stroke. Or was it they didn't really upgrade the porting to match the flow on the earlier 1.8's.

It seems the 1.8 did evolve quite a bit over the years though. With even a sort of Variable cam timing (which im yet to look into) and Variable Intake manifold on the later NBs.

In a way I get away with having so many cars by not having any running cost. Think we are on the same wave length there, I have been trying to get my missus into an EP3 or ATR for a while but she hasn't been driving long and insurance is a joke. Got quoted £1500 for her just on my EJ2 LSi beater.

Yes it's a different engine, but only really in that the bore spacing was increased to accommodate the larger bore, hence why the manifolds etc are not interchangeable.

The lack of reviness can't be attributed to a longer stroke in this case, so it's definitely a case of trying to get more air in through the same sized hole that causes the 1.8 to run out of breath. :nice:

Lol is it weird that I see that as a good thing. Actually love finding flaws because it mean there is room for improvement. Will have to get my porting skills up to scratch an a few spare Mazda heads.

Is kind of s relief having a motor that is not almost perfect already like Honda engines.

Yep. Makes tuning so much easier when you're not just throwing money at parts, but actually working around flaws or compromises.

That said, I'd still love to throw money at a set of Jenveys to go on a later 10:1 VVT motor. I don't care for huge power (kinda fun having to rag it just to keep up with traffic) but about 170bhp with a throaty ITB soundtrack would be just about perfect IMO. :D
