hi all, iv recently just purchased an EK9...original plan was to modify the 9, but i fancy a change as iv already had a few ek's and am looking for a dc2 asap really....

however i dunno which spec to go for(96/98)? is there a big difference between performance? i know they have differences such as the stud pattern, diff size brake disk etc etc..however would i be losing alot of modifying potential by getting 96 from 98?

I think you should go with the 98 spec, since it has:

better brakes
4.78 final drive
A little more torque
HID head lights
4-1 Header

If you buy a 96 you will end up buying 98 spec stuff for your 96 spec one :)

as above mate 98 spec def. honda only ever update things for the better.

96spec comes wit nicer wheels in my opinion but id go for the 98spec cos the s80 ne3 box is way better than the 96 spec an as said above 4-1 mani an better brakes

i went for a 96 spec as i prefer the more track car for the road feel, and prefer teh look.

performance wise theres not much difference...

and if your looking for a teg, i got one i wanna swap for a ek9 lol, a 96 spec one - minter at that! 62k... post in the wanted section if ya interested!

Having owned both, my advice would be the 96spec, theyre more road friendly and nicer to drive on an every day basis, the 98spec gearbox is horrid for motorway driving and it so badly needs a 6th gear. the brakes on the 96spec can be made as good if not better than 98spec brakes with pad/disc upgrades, the engines are the same, and the suspension is more or less the same.

well stock 98spec is better packaged, more stable at limit and has better uprated quality sussy parts.

MugenSi: Why would the 98spec be worser on the motorway than the 96spec since it has longer 4th and 5th gear ratios? 96spec still works out to be shorter even though it has the 4.4FD.

60mph in a 96spec is approx 3100rpm, 60mph in a 98spec is 3400rpm, the 4.785 final drive makes a big difference, there is very little difference in the 4th and 5th ratios when compared like for like. You can quite happily drive a 96spec all day long on a motorway at 70/80mph, when doing the same speed in a 98spec the engine is revving higher and it so badly needs another cog to bring down the engine revs a bit. For the first few weeks after getting my 98spec i kept going for another gear when in 5th, its friggen annoying...so much so i'm considering swapping my 3NE gearbox for a J4D 96spec box!!!

i have the same question as you seeing as im going to be doing a ITR swap into my ek aswell i plan on changing my gearing to 4.9 so that being said is the 98 spec the way go or 96 spec

It doesn't seem to be much difference in the high gears because the 98 spec has longer 4th and 5th gears.

But it does add up with 96spec being slightly longer, but very slightly.

MFactory Competition Products - THE Replacement for Displacement!

96spec 98spec
4th gear 1.107 1.034
5th gear 0.848 0.787
Final drive 4.4 4.785

But for ek9 owners, its a bit worser in comparison when changing to 4.785FD. But the gears are well suited as an allrounder.
