Right, I'm starting to look into getting my car turbo'd.

2 of my mates have turbo cars, ones got a starlet and ones got an mr2.

I was looking at buying a turbo for my car from the likes of garret or turbonetics and it costs something
Like 800-1000 quid.

My mate with the starlet has upgraded to a larger turbo and he said it cost him 40 quid and it's 2nd hand off a Subaru (td05) and my mate with the mr2 said when his turbo went it cost him 90 for a new one.

Why are the ones I'm finding so dear compared to theirs?

For a start their cars come Turbo'd out of the factory, so everything is there to start with so a with a secondhand larger or upgraded turbo all you're having to buy is the turbo itself. To turbo your car you'll need different manifolds, piping, intercooler, ECU, brackets... Plus a hole heap of other odds and sods to get it to work hence the difference in price.

It depends what came with these kits?
same with anything though mate… you could buy a D16 for £200 or you could buy a b16 for £1200
It depends one the quality and performance of the part

Yeah I understand there is far more to it than just the turbo but the turbos I've seen available to me are very dear ( new ofcourse ).

Would this be worth buying.. Is there any way of finding out the manufacturer?

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Also thought I should add I'm going for around 260-280 bhp. Budget is basically I have ~400 pound each month to buy parts and I can carry on until I've got all I need.

The turbos I've seen commonly used are the t3/to4 and t28. Unsure which I'm best going for with the figures I'm after. I'm also running a hondata s300 and i will going to tdi-north to get it tuned.

the turbo itself may have only cost your mate £40, on top of that he will have needed to buy a different manifold, downpipe, oil/water lines, some form of management and get it mapped.
But of course, our cars are not turbo'd as standard so it's going to cost.

Yeh he did. I kind of worded my question salt. I just want to make sure that I'm not over spending by paying out 800 quid for a turbo when a cheaper 2nd hand option will work and be as reliable.

dare say you could source second hand parts for less yeah.

Tbh mate I've heard many different things about turbos
From both ends...
people saying that expensive ones Arn't necessarily worth the money and that some of the cheaper ones can be just as good but Tbh your much better off PMing one of the guys on here and asking them advice
Sorry I cant be any more help, just thought you might want some kind of answer :)

New parts cost more simple. I dont see how anyone can buy a turbo for £40. I purchased a new garrat gt25r from usa and it cost £800 plus taxes. Quality parts have a higher lifespan too

Found some turbos at a decent price from the USA.

I see most people go for the t3/t4 but what Trim is best?

I read that trim is to do with the area but each one is different on this site.

Persoanlly IMO i'd say £800 is no where near enough to do it properly..
yeah you can do it for £500 if you really want to....

Turbo itself
Turbo manifold mini 4-1
Turbo down pipe and exhuast..
External wastegate,
ECU with a remap
Intercooler and piping
Induction kit
Dump valve

Optional but prefered and worth it if you are turboing:
uprated Injectors
FPR

But you must also factor in your brakes as these may need to be upgraded..

keep us updated with what you end up doing though..

Topher.. I am talking about the turbo itself. I understand all the rest is going to add up. I was reading a post on crx uk about a turbo build and the guy uses a turbo off that site I posted above and would just like to know what one I should go for as the t3/t4 has different trims.

Cheers mate that's quite handy. Only thing is it doesn't state a manufacturer for the turbos I don't think.

Im just going to throw out there that I ran an ebay kit for a year without issues. Typically the problems people run into are user error, or improper installation. It's just a coincidence that they purchase a "more reliable" brand name part the second time around and install it properly.

Again, I know this from personal experience. I ran 9 psi on a $1200 ebay turbo kit that I pieced together and didn't have any issues that weren't cause by my own doing.

Cheers topher.

And butterz I've never actually read anyone experience from an eBay kit before, only had people say to steer clear of them as they are no good.
