Car Won't Start

Hi guys,

Firstly I've had a search but can't seem to find a constant solution to this issue so I'm sorry if this is a 'stupid' question!

Anyway, I've recently noticed my battery was showing it's age so I replaced it with a new one (per a prior thread). No issues whatsoever, car had run fine since the swap until this morning when I jumped in and tried to take off!

The problem:
  • I try and start the car, everything as usual.
  • The starter is turning over as usual.
  • However the engine just doesn't start so the starter just continues until I release the key.
  • I tried this a few times over a 10 or so minute period but each time the same issue occurred.

Really not sure what this could be to be honest so am open to any suggestions!

Cheers.

Is the fuel pump priming? have you checked that you have spark?

Ace...check these first.
You may have flooded the engine with gas from your prior efforts to start it up, so you may want to have an extra set ready, just in case this is the problem.

I'm assuming you can tell the pump is priming by the initial noise before (usual) start up?

And as for testing spark plugs would this be the appropriate way to check:

How to Test Spark Plugs | eHow.com

If I need new spark plugs ASAP are there any decent ones Halfords or Honda are likely to sell as I'd like to get this resolved this weekend?

The way I test plugs is to take one out with the lead connected and see if you can see a spark at the tip. Then instead of taking out each plug just change the plug into a different lead. Sounds like the coil is gone being honest. Happened to me a few months ago, car started up and died straight after, then I couldn't get it started again. Got my mechanic up and he thought it was spark related. I got a second hand coil, put it in and it started first turn then.

I'd find it unusual for all spark plugs to go at once.

Just to update this (for future search's sake) I tested all my plugs etc. and found they weren't sparking - turned out to be the distributor.

I replaced the coil inside with a different one and cleaned up the wheel while I was at to see if that would solve the issue or if I'd need a full new unit but it works perfectly. Turned out to be a very cheap fix too as for a full unit I'd have been £100+ :nice:
