after christmas i'm going to be looking into getting some track experience for the first time, my car is already on skunk2 coilovers and has after market brakes.
eventually i'll get into fine tuning the suspension set up for road/track use BUT..
first i want to start increasing the power output of the car.
i'm not looking for straight line speed of course i want it to be nippy around a track N/A
my first question, when looking at used cams i can only find ones that are advertised for B16, are they the same fitment across the b16 range or do i need b16b specific cams?
second question is the same again, intake manifolds b16b specific?
third question, by the looks of it i have a 2.5" cat back with buddy club spec 3 back box? does that sound ok? and is what is the optimal exhaust circumference for a b16b?
lastly, is it really worth trying to tune the b16b engine on a reasonably low budget? or is it worth doing the kswap on a tight budget as they are more tuneable? the downside is that i#ll have to take the car (my daily) off road for a few months and rent a garage as i only have two parking spaces in a communal car park at home..

any input is greatly received and thanks in advance!

Most will say spend your money on handling first and I agree somewhat especially regarding tyres! You can have all the power in the world but if your car handles like sh*t it won't be very good around a track. All B series cams are interchangeable. You would probably be best getting a b18c than pumping money into your b16b.

ok thanks for the advice,
the car has four good nankang ns2's iv'e heard mixed opinions on them but for me they will do, i'm not even sure the wheels will stay.. i'm thinking of getting some 16" teg wheels.
the suspension/brake set up is sufficient enough for me at the moment, iv'e never been on track before and i'm definitely not a pro driver.
i'm not really sure on the b18's surely there's not much difference from a b16b to a b18? (i'd understand if it was a turbo build but i'm wanting to stay N/A)
if i was going to swap engines i'd rather go all out and k swap it, i know someone who's just k swapped a uk dc2 that offered assistance at a small price (alot cheaper than any garage would do it) i'd just have to supply parts and do the easy stuff myself..

My advice, get out on track first and get a feel for it. You will be able to see what areas you or your car is lacking in i.e handling, gear ratios etc. It's the added torque from the 1.8 which makes the most different.

I agree !

First, get some good tyres (Yokohama AD08, Toyo R888, Federal 595 RSR, etc ...) and then a shorter final drive (4.7 should be enough if it's your daily).

When your chassis is finished you can think about getting more hp / torque.

Nankangs will be **** on track and take a right battering tbh. My spec 2's were excellent on the day but People running 888's etc were all over me.

You'd be surprised , there is a noticeable difference between b16 and b18.

K20 , do it cheap and you'll have problems. Your talking between 4-6k for a really really good conversion? You could probably build a decent engine, custom mapping etc for less :)

yeah fair enough, the tyres were on the car as you know alex so until they are shot i'm not going to bother replacing..
I guess i'll see when it comes to it, me and my brother are planning on getting a garage/unit when he comes back from aus and i'll have the facilities to do whatever is needed..
guess til then i'll just enjoy the car and buy bolt on bits and bobs
