Depending on your climate, the best oil for the b16b will be the following:

20 W - 40 - Recommended for climates -10 C to 15 C
20 W - 50 - Recommended for climates between -10 C to 40 C +

5 W - 40 - Recommended for climates between: -30 C or less to 40 C +
10 W - 40 - Recommended for climates between: -20 C to 40 C +
10 W - 30 - Recommended for climates between: -20 C to 30-35 C
5 W - 30 - Recommended for climates between: - 30 C or less to 0 C

Using this information you can't go wrong, I use Motul 10W 40 semi synthetic with no problems at all, I change the oil every 3000 - 5000 km, ALSO I change the gearbox oil when I do this, this is very important. I do this because I use my car for daily drive + track days.

You don't have to change the gearbox oil when the motor oil is done, but it can be done that often if it makes you feel better about the life of the transmission.

I was very concerned about this, since with my old honda I changed the gear box oil every 10,000 km +, and always I had to change synchros! this is why i decided to change gear box oil every 5000 km :nice:

Do you have any idea what is Honda recommendation for gear box oil change?? Is it with every service? I have no idea :angry2:

RVM, what symptoms did you find while driving that you had to replace synchros?

hmmm, RVM, thats just a overall reccomendation for a car used on a road. If Honda get into too much detail then it will make thier customers think too much. Which is why there isn't much details on your manual. If you track your car, then it's a different story, I wouldn't reccomend 10W-30.

Lets take this viscosity of 10W-30

the 1st part of the numbers with the W (10W) means the thickness of the oil when the oil is cold, which also interprets as how fast the oil moves when its cold...

The 2nd part of the numbers 30 means the thickness of the oil when it gets hot, also interprets as how much heat and protection if offers maximum.

The most critical point where your engine wears out most is when it is cold on start up, this is where the most damage is occuring. So a lower number like 5W or 0W will be much much better than 10W as it will protect more.

The other part of the numbers just means how much heat it can tolerate and continue to protect during normal operating temperatures. For a high revving 4cyl such as the Type R engine you will need as much protection when cold and hot. So the number 30 would be just fine on the road but on the track it will break down due to hard revving and its protection will gradually reduce.

Honda recommends 10W-30 because this viscosity can be used world wide in any place hot or cold. So its a general viscosity. If you track your car, then you should be looking to get a better viscosity like 5W-40 or 0W-40. Theres nothing that will protect your car more on cold start up than 0W. It's just hard to find this grade and more expensive.

I wouldn't take the 2nd set of numbers more than 40 on a high revving 4cyl because it will create more drag internally and lose a bit of power. You'll see stuff like 5W-50, 10W-50, 15W-50 etc. Stay away from these grades because they are not good for 4 cyl motors, it will make your motor quieter but loose a bit of power and create more damage during cold start. These are more for older engines and high powered drag cars or V8s.

If you want something better than Honda's recommended grade for HONDA 4cyl engines, I recommend the following;

TRACK
5W-40
0W-40(best for track use)

ONCE A WHILE TRACK
5W-30(overall good)

ROAD
5W-30
0W-40
0W-30(if you can find, then this is the best grade for everyday use)

I use 5W-40 and 0W-40

Castrol EDGE makes 5W-30 and 0W-40

does anybody knows what oil should i put in on B18C type R engine? is 10W30 will be good or 5W30? should I use full sentetic or just regular? Im just using my car for street use not track.... Thanks.

10W 40 semi synthetic should be ok, I'll go for motul, just my personal opinion.

oh i see.... I thought 10W40 will be too thick, well that was my friend says...

In my B16B the 10W 30 didn't worked well, I consume 1.5 liter of oil in 1000 km! and only like 100 km at the track! :nono:

10W 40 solved the problem
