B16B Engine and Nitrous?

Well I see a lot of turbo vs supercharger threads but none about nitrous:

What does everyone think?

I know with the VAG range they are spectacle, which is understandable but as I help with tuning in the VAG group I know that with a throttle position switch (TPS) and Minimax controller you do not see any problems. We install up to 50bhp on a stock 1.8 20VT and with our demo Skoda Octavia we have a 100bhp shot - but the engine is fully built and is running 602bhp without nitrous.

We have not long put a turbo on a Del Sol B16A (again demo car) and we are running that at 300bhp with no internal modifications so I would think that you could look up to a 75bhp shot with a TPS and Minimax controller on the B16B?

Any Ideas.... I am unsure what to do with my EK9 when I get it... Want to do the usual things but maybe a few months down the line either fit a turbo, supercharger or nitrous....

I'm against all of these three mods as for an EK9 - B16B build cuz I think the car looses its unique identity....
But, if I would ever accept one, that would be a supercharger or a turbocharger. Why to destroy the whole idea of this car with an NOS?? :(

Each to their own mate just keeping my options open :) - whats the reason for being against NOS?

I know the B16B is a fantastic engine... and I might end up going totally N/A and maybe even keep it standard.... yeah I doubt that!

Before starting this discussion, may I ask a fundamental question? Track or street oriented use? :D

As with most of my cars it will be both:

Going to be my daily driver and approx 5-7 track days per year.

im not a fan of nitrous only becuase its not always there, some people may like that though. but you know what they say "nitrous loves high compression". if you wanna do it i say go for it :nice: if you dont like it you can always take it off, only thing i suggest a compressiong check before install and at least 1 a moth there after to make sure everything is ok :)

Sure will do that if I end up with nitrous and I know what you mean by not having it always there.... but good old UK weather it will never put the power down - I can get my Ibiza to spin up in 4th in wet conditions thats only 190ish bhp but does have like 300lb/ft!

Anyway we shall see :) anyone else got any feed back on this and how much power you recommend?

Cheers
Mike

as far as power typically most people dont exceed a 50 shot on a stock honda motor.

agreed... will require some good tuning as well.

Hey blinx, how does the tuning go with nitrous? Don't you have to have a 2nd map for when nitrous is on? Can this be done on a Power FC? And how would the computer know when nitrous is activated? :thanks:

not sure about power FC but most nitrous kits come with there own source of fuel enrichment :nice:

If anything I will be using the wizards of NOS kit which comes with a fuel and nitrous solenoids so I think there shouldnt be any tuning needed.... if so I will just get my boss to do it somehow :D lol

Has anyone on here actaully been using nitrous on their EK9?

B16B is made of excellent materials! It can safe run on 9000 rpm. However NOS is quite of dangerous because of high speed of acceleration of getting limit to RPM-s. You reach 9000 and blockage very fast and in split of second it is time to release the switch. Second thing, NOS is quite a hit to any engine. Because of compression and small volume 1.6l it is not good to run it more then 50 HP. Most of people will use only 25-35 hp on B16B, nozzle in this case is 0.8 mm or 0.32 inch.

Either wet or dry system will use some kind of fuel enrichment system. Dry (one I have) uses vacuum lines to do that. Wet as it name says is mixing fuel and nos and then induce into intake.
Nos needs fuel, fuel is what burns. In my opinion, if one is not greedy and realize it is 1.6 l engine it is far more safer, cheaper and efficient to have NOS than to make turbo. much more could go wrong with turbo install, although if i could I would put both!!! :) But if you leave 25 hp nozzles, why putting it in the first place. Oh one thing more, you have to retard ignition, just a little bit.

Thanks for that mate, well it will be a 'wet' kit that would be installed.

I understand that it is a 1.6 - a very well made 1.6 :) its either I spend ££££'s on a turbo kit/supercharger kit or ££££'s on N/A tuning or I could spend approx of £700 all in fitted for an extra 25-50bhp not bad £ per bhp

Of which does not have to be used all the time, maybe only on 1/4 strips and when I am out there looking for a quick blast :)

Hmmm we shall see... might have to be done just for the giggles....

B16Bs R/S ratio is good tilll 10,000rpm
B16A 9500rpm
B18C 9000rpm.

if you consider NOS, first, the piston has to be change, using a stock B16B piston is suicide, use it once and tell me how worse the melting was, second, 1.6 gets a NOS boost wont done any power then destroying it
