I need some advise / help to diagnose my intermittent overheating issues.

Ever so often my heat gauge would start creeping up to about the 3/4 mark, and as soon as I start driving the gauge would drop.
It was initially diagnosed as a blocked radiator (aluminium), but after a 2nd opinion, the radiator was diagnosed as being fine. They did a pressure test, which revealed no leaks in the system. They also did some other test to check if the head gasket was gone, but that confirmed the head gasket is still fine.
I replaced:
Radiator cap (Behr as the the radiator needs one with a longer spring)
Fan Switch (Echlin as the oem one costs +/- R900)
Thermostat (PJ, gonna replace with OEM one soon)
Also bled the system and replaced the fluid with a 50/50 water and antifreeze mix.
The problem still persists.

This morning I noticed that when I switch the headlights off, the temp gauge drops. Can this be a symptom of the actual cause?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Could be an electrical fault.......

What about your water pump - you checked or replaced that?

Was it a compression test they done for the head gasket? And are you getting any bubbles in your expansion tank?

some blue liquid in a syringe like instrument. Apparently if it stay blue, then the HG is fine.

No bubbles at all.

If your head gasket is fine, your rad is fine, your water pump is replaced, your thermostat and rad fan comes on ok and theres no air in the system....

i'd say it maybe your temp guage is fecked

try a different instrument cluster if you can get a hold of one

I am still trying to get to the source of my problem.

Can my Water temp sensor, or temp sending unit be causing these symptoms?
