Does anyone know anything (or know anyone that knows anything) about designing and building kit cars?

dont know anything but i know that you cant buy a kit thats designed all ready and all you have to do is put it together ?

just a thought

Yes you can, however I have questions specific to the design/development process.

in theory you could use a finite elements program to calculate the forces and bending moments on the design chassis frame, depends how complex the frame is and how much information you can input into the program. No expert in using it but was giving a run down on how the pedestrian walkway was designed and modeled for victoria square in belfast using a structural engineering program to calculate the various loads and moments acting through the structure.

as you can see its a very complex structure, but it was all modeled virtually and tested for every eventuality even wind loading.

Cheers Stu, I'll give it a look.

One of my mates actually races in the Locost series, been away to a few races and test sessions with him last year. He was punting his new one round Silverstone the other week, you might have seen it at some point, although all cateringvan type cars look the same on track...

No, didn't know anything about it! Any build thread?

Just realised it wasn't you at Silverstone, it was Jerrick (MeisterR)

I think my questions (basically preliminary market research) may be a little bit extraneous to the Locost chaps as their cars are being built to regulations. I'm aiming more at the clean sheet designs.

Will eventually look like this:

Currently looks more like this:

Needs to be ready for 7th April for the first race at Silverstone :D

I'll copy over a build thread later.

That's a funny looking Locost! :D

Looks superb, look forward to reading about the build!

Iv got a fellow student friend who is with me in our final year @ portsmouth. he is working on a personal project i believe where he intends to design his own kit car.

For software, dont underestimate Pro Engineer. Very accurate designs can be made aswell as lots of structural testing.

wow Freaky that that looks a very purposeful car, front spoiler is nuts!!

Good Luck, get a thread up!!

I have 10,000 hours on it. Top bollock software. :nice:

I should clarify some more: My questions are related to specifying the baseline setup, I.e, "my goals are X, Y and Z, what brakes/suspension/powertrain do I need to create a well balanced car?"

My expectations are that a few will have everything calculated as precisely as possible, some might pencil out some back of the envelope calculations for a baseline and correct it all in testing, and the rest will simply copy something established.

I'm interested in the ones that want to do everything precisely but may not have the resources to do so.

Then locostbuilders is exactly where you want to be asking.
