Lookin for info on the 98 spec itr gearbox.

I have an s4c ctr box but the syncros are on the way out so want to upgrade to the s80. I’ve read plenty on 4.4 and 4.9 final drives etc, dont want one... the s80 from what i know suits me the best, so I have my mind made up, i dont want to hear people sayin get this get that... I'm gonna get a s80 :)

I know it has the same 1st - 3rd gears and a longer 4th and 5th, it has a 4.785 final drive too, but what does this all mean with regards to acceleration and motorway driving?

Have read loads of thread and been given some info but still not 100% on what difference its gonna make

Has anyone put an itr 98 spec s80 onto there b16 ??
Is there any noticable difference when driving ?

I did, back in 2003.

The difference I felt is that the engine rev up faster because of the final drive, and also keep in mind the itr 98 spec gearbox has a LSD this alone makes a BIG difference.

yes there is a big difference 1,2,3 but i was disappointed with the drop in revs from 3-4. this was with a b16a and the lack of torque made the car feel like you'd missed a gear.

best motoring tested the 96 and 98 spec integras and the crossed the 1/4 mile at the same time despite the difference in final drives/ratios.

Sounds good so :) Thanks for the info, really appreiciate it

am thinking of getting an s80 too, but like you said, what rev range would i be in 5th gear at 70mph? 4000?

Sounds good

Does it? Sounds bad to me, I do a lot of driving in 4th and 5th as I would imagine most people do on the road, unless you spend a lot of time driving in the first three gears then you're not really going to see the benefits of the lower FD, only the downsides of the longer 4th and 5th, i.e. dropping out of the power band.

The switch from 3-4-5 makes the box less enjoyable imo, was quite dissapointed. I would personally get a 4.4 s80 tranny and switch the lsd for a 4.75. or get a 4.75 and switch the 4th and 5th gear for a s80 4.4.. (its the same thing!)

sorry to bump this thread up, but i did some searching and couldn't find an answer. i would like to know your opinions on which s80 you guys would prefer on a high comp b18c, 96spec or 98spec. would love the best of both worlds lol but don't think i have enough funds to nick the 4th and 5th gears out of a 96spec s80 and rebuild them into a 98spec tranny. cheers!

Depends on the type of driving you will be doing, round town and under 100km/h I'd say the 96 box would be more fun especially with the 4.7FD.

I have a Spoon stroked B16B with S4C + 4.9FD and 1.5 LSD. Nice and close and great for the track but way too hard out for the street. Even to drive to the track I'm doing nearly 4000RPM for 4 hours @ 100km/h, not that fun. Just dropped a 98 spec S80 in with stock LSD so hopefully will give a nice balance of accel and open road driving...
