Which OIL recommended for the B16b

Right now, I use 5w30 mobil 1 synthetic. My next oil change will be amsoil fully synthetic. I live in a 4 seasons climate similar to that of the UK, so 5w30 is good, if I did live somewhere hotter I would use a 10w30.

I don't the think 5W or 10W matters, its the 30 or 40 or 50 that matters. xW is just for start up purpose. Lower W number is the faster the oil moves and the 30,40,50 number is thickness..

Thats what I learnt anyway.

But 10W-30 will give no probs where ever you live. But dropping the 10W to 5W is always better for start up protection and in cold countrys. 30 is best.

We are using:
1. castrol Synthec 5W-50 - one bottle package for US market
2. Liqui-Moly 10W-60 GT1 racing

Some of our engines lost commpresion while racing, we used CERATEC - Liqui Moly with their oil, and this additive realy works if properly used!

Good info:nice:

also i reccomend sticking to semi synthetic as going all synthetic might not be good for an old series engine. Someone told me about how 100% synthetic would be useless unless it's been used from it's birth. Because something about the minerals etc have covered the internals...

never got around finding out what he meant.

The 1000hp evo drag car in Australia uses Castrol EDGE 0W-40. This is extreme.

Good basic info... Thanks:cool:

due to the recent influx of oil related questions i decided to sticky this one since it gave so many opinions and seemed the most informative.

I thought i'd just post this in addition to this thead;

Lets take this viscosity of 10W-30

the 1st part of the numbers with the W (10W) means the thickness of the oil when the oil is cold, which also interprets as how fast the oil moves when its cold...

The 2nd part of the numbers 30 means the thickness of the oil when it gets hot, also interprets as how much heat and protection if offers maximum.

The most critical point where your engine wears out most is when it is cold on start up, this is where the most damage is occuring. So a lower number like 5W or 0W will be much much better than 10W as it will protect more.

The other part of the numbers just means how much heat it can tolerate and continue to protect during normal operating temperatures. For a high revving 4cyl such as the Type R engine you will need as much protection when cold and hot. So the number 30 would be just fine on the road but on the track it will break down due to hard revving and its protection will gradually reduce.

Honda recommends 10W-30 because this viscosity can be used world wide in any place hot or cold. So its a general viscosity. If you track your car, then you should be looking to get a better viscosity like 5W-40 or 0W-40. Theres nothing that will protect your car more on cold start up than 0W. It's just hard to find this grade and more expensive.

I wouldn't take the 2nd set of numbers more than 40 on a high revving 4cyl because it will create more drag internally and lose a bit of power. You'll see stuff like 5W-50, 10W-50, 15W-50 etc. Stay away from these grades because they are not good for 4 cyl motors, it will make your motor quieter but loose a bit of power and create more damage during cold start. These are more for older engines and high powered drag cars or V8s.

If you want something better than Honda's recommended grade for HONDA 4cyl engines, I recommend the following;

TRACK
5W-40
0W-40(best for track use)

ONCE A WHILE TRACK
5W-30(overall good)

ROAD
5W-30
0W-40
0W-30(if you can find, then this is the best grade for everyday use)

I use 5W-40 and 0W-40

Castrol EDGE makes 5W-30 and 0W-40

what was that about Fully Synthetic not being good to use??

can someone clarify this please?

that is it ok to use 100% synth when you changing oil?

and i agree to above, as i have learn the 0W just means it is more viscous at low temp? but I do get a lot info about how the oil can be "too thin". so i do get confused abit....

yeh, i heard about it from someone for old engines, but your B series type R engine is fine.

Yes but as it heats up it gets thicker. thiner start up oil isn't as good for older engines. Infact all of the latest cars recommends and approves of castrols 0W-40 like Porsche, Benz, BMW, Audi etc etc.

I've used 0W-40, 5W-50, 5W-30 and I have never had engine burning up oil problems. Infact, sometimes I wish it did when I over fill it...

It's not that is not recommended is that for the price, if you car is daily driven car semi synthetic should be ok.

arite m8 .

i was told to use 5w30 in mine and never had a problem with that .

Im using 5w-40 and the only thing i have to point out is when i get a bit into racing mood (vtec use ) the oil just starts to vanish xD
Im getting near time change oil, im going to try use 10w-40 the usual standart for honda in this country temperatures etc.

Anyone here uses the ek9 as a track only car?

After a 20 + lap race, I always see that my car needs oil, almost half a liter, a mechanic told me that it is normal, what do you guys think? :nerv:

My motor compressions are ok, and the car doesn't have any issues :nerv:

Same thing happen to me last weekend at the track, and I'm using motul 15w 50 oil. :nerv: my mechanic told me the same thing, R motors tend to consume oil at the track

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :nono:

i use redline oil in all my honda race cars....proves to add horse power.....:drive: expensive tho....$10 a quart
