Hi guys,

I am about to replace my ek's engine oil. I tend to stick 2 the same brand each time round. I know it depends on countries temps (cold/hot) for the specific oil density...

However i was wondering if there is any (special) oil to treat our B16's to..???

:thanks:

I use Mobil Rally Formula 5w-50, which is fine for everyday use!!! Now ive heard back some time ago abt Castrol "Edge", which would be PerfecT for those of u who just go track use...:nice:

Mr. Spoon recommends OEM Honda oil, the one in the manual, want me to post a video of this?

I prefer Motul oil, i had a honda with a B16A, and i only used motul 300v competition 100 % synthetic 15w 50, and never had any problems :)

Well to answer the question, the best source to answer this questions is...

The Honda EK9 Civic Type R Manual!

depending on your climate, the best oil for the b16b will be the following:

20 W - 40 - Recommended for climates -10 C to 15 C
20 W - 50 - Recommended for climates between -10 C to 40 C +

5 W - 40 - Recommended for climates between: -30 C or less to 40 C +
10 W - 40 - Recommended for climates between: -20 C to 40 C +
10 W - 30 - Recommended for climates between: -20 C to 30-35 C
5 W - 30 - Recommended for climates between: - 30 C or less to 0 C

Using this information you can't go wrong, I use Motul 10W 40 semi synthetic with no problems at all, I change the oil every 3000 - 5000 km, ALSO I change the gearbox oil when I do this, this is very important.

I scanned you the page from the EK9 Honda Civic Type R Manual where it talks about the oil, check out the graph of the bottom..

The official Honda engine oils, "Honda Engine Oil" on the left is semi-synthetic while "Honda VTEC-LEV" on the right is mineral.

Article:

One question that have always been asked whenever Honda fans discusses about VTEC is that issue of the best engine oil for the engine. While there are many different brands of oil available on the market, many with great specifications, some even with a "Formula-1 Pedigree" (e.g. Mobil-1), I think the answer by Mr. Ichisima, president of the famous SPOON SPORTS Honda specialist tuner in Japan during his interview on issue-1 of BEST MOTORing International, is the best and most concise. Mr. Ichisima said it simply for engine oil, the "price per litre" is no indication of suitability, i.e. a multi-dollar oil will not necessarily work better than the cheaper alternative. He goes on to make a firm recommendation for the best engine oil for your Honda engine, the oil available from the dealer is probably the best. Personally, I think his recommendation makes the best sense.

Honda VTEC-LEV oil

In the Malaysian market at least, Honda officially markets two grades of engine oil. The "Honda Engine Oil" is a semi-synthetic 15W-40 oil which is recommended for all Honda engines, including the super high spec'ed DOHC VTEC and DOHC iVTEC versions. The Honda "VTEC-LEV" engine oil is meant for the low-emissions rated engines, e.g. D15B 3-stage VTEC or the D17 on the new Civic. This oil is mineral and is spec'ed at 10W-30. Owners of Hondas will most probably not go wrong with either of these oils. Based on the information on the packaging, for most SOHC engines, Honda's VTEC-LEV oil seems to be the best recommendation. For the DOHC and DOHC-VTEC engines, Honda's "Engine Oil" will probably be the best recommendation. However, it would be best to consult the dealer when making the decision on which engine oil to use for the car. The packaging listed "Idemitsu" as the OEM manufacturer of these oils, most probably manufactured to Honda's unique specifications, just like what OKI do for micro-controllers for Honda's ECUs.

I myself have since switched from Shell lubricants to Honda's "Engine Oil" on my Integra. With Honda's "Engine Oil", the engine now seems much quieter and smoother at idle, with a clear feeling of "lightness" when asked to rev to high rpms (which is probably due to the lighter 40 weight as compared to Shell Helix Plus which has a weight rating of 50). The engine note is much more race-like with a much clearer distinct change in note at the VTEC changover point.

Mr. Ichisima's recommendations were on the spot, and I would recommend to readers to try them out for themselves too.

Well... wot can i say!:D

Great write up... nice info. Saddly ive just purchased 4L of Castrol GTX magnatec 10W-40 earlier today!
Decided to go for manfacturer specs and stop using 5W-50 (Mobil) as i drive my ek daily.

ive found the US-spec honda motor oil can not hold up under high rpm extended use, i can smell it after hard driving :(

Does the EK9 service manual recommend 15W40 as well?

I dont have mine. :/

oem honda reccomends 10W30. I don't think going to 40 would be a good idea.. especially for a high revving 4cyc.

Also 100% synthetic oils arn't really reccomended for any engine that has not been using 100% synthetic from the begining of it's life. It's useless and would save you more money to just use semi-synthetic, which might even work better.

The think the grade is more important then the brand unless ofcourse you go for something really cheap.

I use the new Castrol edge 5W30, I opted it over Motul because they didn't have that grade. And is cheaper.

you can pretty much use any thing between 0W30 - 10W-30.

errr, don't forget we are talking about the type R engines here...
Honda reccomends 10W30 throughout the type R range.

10W40 might be for a non type R engine.

so which out of the honda oils would be best for the ek9? mmm- gon have to check to see if they seel those in england, prob have to go direct to honda

like what rvm says; Spoon chief says OEM HONDA 10W-30

If you live in cold places, better 0W-30/40 or 5W-30

5W-30 will give you more protection than 10W-30 on start up when engine isn't warmed up yet. Less wear to be straight.

This is more suitable for my lifestyle. So yeah, I think 5W-30 is the way to go in England.

oh, HONDA doesnt have 5W-30 grades.

Better get Castrol EDGE which they definitely have and they also have another grade which I was tempted to get which was the 0W-40. This one though is expensive.

Gdluck :D

alot of people on the integra dc2 forum reccomend silkolene pro s 5w40 oil. it's designed for high revving engines and seems to have a very low consum[ption on vtec compared to other oils of the same weight :nice:

oh thanks,
guess i was messing it up using Fully Synthetic.:angry2: I was confused as all i intended was to giv max protection due to high revving engine. However the Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 is Synthetic based but not Fully.:nice:

As i will now use 10W -40 syntetic based instead of 5W-50 fully syntetic i hve bought a flush to help drain prev oil... "pic below"

Do u know if changing oil density & spec(fully or semi) a prob..? :thanks:

you don't need to flush it out actually. Just pore a bit of the new oil in and let it run out when your waiting for the oil to drain out at the end.

SPOON Chief doesnt reccomend flushing.. but I'm not sure when switching oils.

I guess every oil has different detergents etc. so maybe...

But if your using the same brand then I guess it's ok not to flush.

I reccomend you use 10W-30 for your engine though.

10W-30 for me on the next service it is.

But I live in a hot climate, Im wondering if 15W-40 is more suited to the job?
I had Castrol Magnatec semi in mind.

I use mobil 1 fully synthetic oil, here's a photo, 500 miles, no problems at all, car running great. i will change to 10w 30 motul fully synthetic oil in the next service :)

I'm going to change my oil to motul, because at my country track, all the mobil 1 oil users had some engine problems, mostly overheating, and the motul users didn't had any problems at all, it might be bad luck, but i'm changing just in case, :nerv:
