Windscreen de-misting in a track car

Hey chaps,

I have a question for those with experience of windscreen de-misting in track/race/rally cars. I will be removing the blower, A/C matrix and all the other related bits from under/behind dash. The only bits I will be retaining are those that direct air towards windscreen/side windows. Now my question is whether I need a heater and a blower or whether a simple 12v bilge blower alone would do the job? I won't be running the car in the winter, but the ambient humidity tends to be high in Scotland even in the summer lol. I've had a look at the heater/fan combos that JJC offer, but to me it looks like a little heat exchanger with a PC fan stuck onto it and I'm dubious whether it will actually produce enough heat/air flow to demist the windscreen. One thing that sways me towards retaining some sort of a heater is that I would also like the option to turn up the heater if the engine temp was to shoot up on track.
Another option I have been contemplating is a heated windscreen, but I could do without the expense.
Anyone with any sort experience please share your knowledge. Thanks!

I use a 12v heater blower directed at the screen and it works fine. Mate uses just a fan and it also works grand..

I used a heated windscreen. Worked a charm but the car knew when it was on. I suppose there will be a way of hooking it into the ECU via the air con pin so the ECU picks the revs up slightly at tickover.
My car was abit more efficient at cooling when I got rid of all the heaters as well.

Nice one thanks guys.
Paul - that is the very fan I've been looking at, they sell two sizes can you remember which one did you go for? I take it you've just looped the outlet/inlet for the heater on the engine block? Also, if I can see correctly are you blowing hot air from above the exhaust manifold? That's a neat idea!
Murray - TBH heated windscreen would be preferred way but if other (cheaper) options work I don't think I'll be going to the expense. Maybe in the future or if I manage to crack the windscreen! I wonder why the cooling was better with all the heaters removed? The coolant volume will be slightly lower and you can't use the cabin heater to help to cool the engine down? Very interesting observation!

I use this setup, heater pipes connect up to it, little matrix with a 12v fan built in.

Hi,
Yes there's a 90mm trumpet mounted to the floor straight above the exhaust (obviously a hole in the floor as well). I've just checked and it's the 330CFM

rainex do a de-misting product.. its cheap and works amazingly well and lasts a long time. should be available at Halfords, or any motor factors. I used the rainex de-mist on the inside and the standard rainex on the outside screen.. no need for windscreen wipers then:nice:
