Wheel bearing.

just wondering has one one changed the wheel bearing themselves.... i mean as far as taking the hub off so the bearing can be taking out and pressed into place? or is it a job to just leave to the people that know what there at?
 
I depends which wheel bearing you are on about the front or back? I have done them myself for the back you have to get the brake calliper out of the way and take the bearing cover off it is easy no press needed ! For the front the hardest part is opening the nuts on the ball joints and getting it pressed but if you take your time and be patient it is an easy process!
 
i did most of it myself, i took the hub off and all, but as far as pressing out the old one and pressing in a new one, that should be left to profession FOR SURE. in fact next time i will just let a shop do the whole thing, its a bit of a headache...
 
re;honda=god,it's the front drivers side.

i don't mind getting my hands dirty and doing it, but theres ment to be a couple of hours work in it and i was just wondering if it's straight forward or a job i'd be better off staying away from and paying a mechanic to do.

re;blinx9900, i wouldn't think of pressing the bearing my self, the more i learn about cars, the more i learn i don't have a clue about cars!!
 
they are easy to do if u have a ramp and all the tools to do the job but like sayed if u dont have a clue what u are doing then it is a job for a mechanic. its so easy to **** things eg ball joints n stuff and if the bearing dont go in quite straight thats it ****ed and prob the hub 2
 
had mine changed last week, 1 was whining a little so just bought some oem and changed both fronts to be safe

im lucky as all bushes, arms, ball joints, hub nuts etc are are new/changed within last year or so so most stuff came apart easily

tbh, its not worth doing yourself unless you have vice/press at home and usual good set of tools and have good experience with this sort of work

its basically job that takes time and load of elbow grease and some hard hitting with lump hammer, pain in the arse job

if none of the ball joints/ nuts etc at that end of your car have ever been of then the harder its gonna be

i basically paid mate to take all the arms of and then took them to garage who used combination of press, huge amounts of pounding with lump hammer, angle grinder and chisel to take old out and put new in then just took arms back to mate who put everything back togther again

i also had aligment checked after to be safe due to bits taken part

if doing yourself buy yourself set of new split pins (50p at any motor factor) and 2 new hub nuts from honda

if you run a bead of weld round the inside of the old bearing it will fall out near enough. No need for pounding and hitting hard with a lump hammer.

Guess when u in the trade and do them alot, u no easy ways to get them out :)

ye but not alot of people have a welder at home plus u dont want to warp the hub with to much heat wheel bearings aint ment to almost just fall off. and if u dont have a press or a hammer u cant just run a bed of weld to the new bearing to put it back on lol. so with me being in the trade to and on my car i know i would be gettin it pressed in

i've been lucky to get in contact with a guy who is the head mechanic in a honda garage so the car is going to him tuesday and i'm gonna get him to have a full look over the car while he's got it. happy days!!
