i think he means literally a straight bit of pipe from the manifold back. so going under the fuel tank and not around it

I bought a custom one that went under the tank once, never again. Wasnt low and was scraping everything. Not too bad if you run a fuel cell though because it can pulled up tight.

I might just get one made for track days
What part of the world do you live? Only, you wouldn't get on 99% of tracks here in the UK with an exhaust utilising 0 silencers. lol
Even if you went for something that follows the car's exhaust tunnel using minimal silencers, something like a Buddyclub Spec 2, you won't stand a chance.

was this on a show day though? i find that most venues are far more relaxed with noise limits on show days than actual trackday events.
youd not make it on the track at brands, snet, bedford and possibly donnington with a spec2 on a trackday.
ITBs can set the meters off at brands!

Few occasions at rockingham were mimms and a few evening track sessions.
Castle coombe was a track session.
On all occasions obviously got sound tested.
Some of the guys at mimms rockingham got flagged for noise even the boosted guys but for some reason ive never had any issues.
To be honest i think ive always got lucky and they turn a blind eye!
