Ive found the threads in my gearbox mount holes have been stripped and need to know to fix it. The smaller M10 hole is completely screwed and the bigger M12 holes arent much better and inside the hole i found what looks to be pieces of a helicoil but im not 100% sure

Anyone know the best way to fix this? Should i just tap bigger holes straight into the aluminum and use bigger bolts or should i be using something like a helicoil or a time sert and stick to original sized bolts?

Is the M12 bolt in the picture the right length bolt because it looks short to me but thats what came out of it..

Cheers

It's really common for these to strip. I guess a helicoil is the best solution.

Ye im wondering if thats the best way to go due to the amount of weight thats guna be pulling down on them

Anyone done this job before? If so what did you use

If it was my car I'd just tap it, you'll need to tap it to get the helicoil in anyway. But the proper way would be to helicoil it or replace the casing. Plenty helicoil kits for sale online!

yeah might try the helicoil option, need to look into how to use them as ive never done it

If the bolt is m12 is it a m12 coil you need? Wont i need to drill the hole out to a bigger size say m14 and use a m14 coil?

After looking at my other EG and seeing all 3 bolts are M12 i think that small hole in the first picture has already been messed with

You will need a M12x1.25 helicoil kit. You can get them from eBay with all the correct drill bits and taps all in a handy little box.

so the kit worked well, never used helicoils before and had to practice on a old ABS pump before risking the gearbox, highly recommend practicing on something if you never used them

Much better than before and only cost £10, win!
