After years and years of saying I'll go, I finally got round to getting to the Ring. My ATR Turbo is off the road the mo, so we took my brothers EK9 which we've only had for just under 2 months.

Cars pretty stock, I put YellowStuff Pads on, RBF600 fluid, Brembo OE discs, Eibach Springs and Kumho KU 36 road tyres. Not very impressed with the brakes, they needed bedding in onthe first day too 3 laps and the drive to Germany, but even then they just don't stop the car with the bite it needs. Tyres were great.

I thought the car being stock and used to 400+hp VTECs would be a let down. But I'm hooked on it, the car was amazing to drive, reminded me of my DC2s in the past but better. I really fell in love with the chassis (only driven it 100 miles on roads before).

I'm definitely taking it back in May regardless of my other cars. She's so involving to drive. As you can tell I'm hooked on it. My brother has mentioned he is thinking of replacing the EK9 next year, which means I keep it and K20 it! Lol.

Anyways here's my 4th lap the camera died and I didn't get anymore footage. Still didn't have much confidence in the brakes. My fastest was 8:57, was going quicker but yellow flags came out. I did 8 laps total.

I'll be back in 2 weeks but in a 320d Touring as I'm passing through, that should be fun lol.

Also hooked up with Jesse and Matt, well i knew they were going but i turned up in the car park of the hotel and they were all parked up!

Here's the lap:

Sounds like a fit Ek9 you got there pal! I know what you mean its not all about power, its about the package of the car as a whole. The Ek9 hits the nail on the head eh :drive:

Decent lap in a stocker. Afew more laps and you'll knock the time down further just by carrying more speed and knowing where your going.

Cheers bud, she is nice and tight lol.

Exactly, the EK9 is so involving to drive, you can really press on and feel everything its doing, love the back end being nice and light and control-able with the throttle and steering. I think its what every good driver craves for, the challenge to get 100% of out of the car and the circuit.

Cheers bud. Yeah i lift cause i cant see the bend or know the circuit well enough, just by watching this video even though its not my quickest i can see where i adjust my line to go in at high speed and stay in VTEC.

I need more confidence in the brakes and just learn the car abit more, hardly driven it, some bends if i take flat i cannot slow down enough for the next bend. But hey its a challenge trying to get 100% out of this on the Ring.

You going next year?

The plan is to go again some time next year yeah. I ran yellows for a while, didn't find them too bad once you've bedded them in and got them real hot the first time. Always went alittle soft towards the end of a session though.

Sounds like a very healthy engine, nice drive also mate :nice:

Thanks guys, I did a bit of analysis on my Ring lap after a Subaru owner saying it was impossible to get under 9 let along 9 in a stock EK9.

Based on this video, as this is the only video evidence i have, i was faster on other laps but have no camera.

1. My start, i do not bolt out of the cones, i do a few brake tests which decreases my speed to the bridge - I go under the bridge at 0:50 seconds in the video.
2. I have a 12 stone passenger
3. I dont have full confidence in the brakes (they were playing up day before)
4. I exit the last bend at 9:50 and lift, to give more cool down time as she was hot - minus 50 seconds on the start thats 8:50, add 5 seconds to get to the gantry, 8:55.

Now the big one, found out the reason for the car getting hot on some laps, and drinking alot of oil, was because the headgasket on cylinder 1 & 4 was broken and loosing compression, the oil was going into the water galleries.

Pre Ring my mates EK9 pulled away from my brothers, now the head gasket has been done, the difference is minimal. So i was quite down on power, and out of VTEC it felt dead, now it feels loads better.

So this car is deffinatly capable of getting into the 8:40's imo an 8:45 is managable for this car and a any good driver. That pretty epic for a stock 1.6 production car.

Typical Subaru owner lol
Shame about the head gasket, looks like you'll have to take it again and see how she goes!

Lol - If i had the cash id be there this weekend!

I'll be heading back out in May if the weather is OK, depending on what other car I have (track toy or my ATR) I'll get my brother to drive the EK9 there so I can do more laps in that too.

Tempted to take a spare set of wheels and semi slicks, along with better brake pads........i mean all manufacturers these days do laps on semi slicks lol.
