As the title suggests, got stopped tonight for having import plates on my 9,first time in 7 months of owning it. Traffic cop told me that people have a misunderstanding that they automatically think that because their car is an import they can have square plates. Apparently you can only have them if the car wont allow UK style plates,i.e a square recess in the bumper etc.

Basicly ended up with a 21 day producer and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on whether this right or just a copper being an arse basically?!

That's news to me, never heard of somebody being stopped for that before!

Sounds like he's being a bit of a c**t to me! Never heard of that before!

Sense a bit of sarcasm in that 2 comments! Although to be fair after editing my search from 'import registration plates' to 'import number plates' I have found out that 12"x6" bike plates are only permitted if the configuration of the car's bodywork won't allow anything else but mine are 13"x7" plates which I'm sure are legal import plates, yet he said there's plenty space front and back to run UK plates. Most likely just get my mate to stamp it at his work and leave it as is!

Youve been unlucky and got a dick of a cop, i got pulled for my plates on my uk ej9, and politely told them that when there is the appropriate codes on the bottom of the plat, they are 100% legal.

Yeah,i was under the impression as long as the lettering was 64mm in height with the correct spacings they were legal. Never heard of anything like the fact you have to display UK plates if the car allows you too!

not illegal at all mate, just a cop who thinks he knows it all but in this case he is wrong

If it was in Denmark, the policeman was right, no joke lol.

Quote from VOSA user quide section 6.3 page 6:

" imported vehicles whose/construction/design cannot acommodate standard size number plates are permitted to display registration plates with smaller charecters, in line with those for tricycles and quadricycles. Their margains and verticle space between groups may also be reduced to 5mm"

Quad and trike relevent dimensions:

Character height: 64mm (all other vehicles: 79mm)
Character width except letter i and number 1: 44mm (all other vehicles 50mm)
Stroke width : 10 mm (all other vehicles 14mm)
Space between two characters in group:10 mm (all other vehicles 11mm)
Vertical space between groups of characters:13mm (all other vehicles: 19mm)
Horizontal space between groups of charecters: 30mm (all other: 33mm)
Margins (minimum) 11mm (all ither vehicles 11mm)

Also the law about plates having to have postcodes on only applys to vehicles registered ON or AFTER 1st of september 2002

This is how the information appears in the VOSA manual so stick to this and you should be fine.

Ek9's actually can house uk plates so technically using jap plates is illegal. but you would have to find quite a dick of a tester to fail you for it. If you know someone i would just get it stamped abd leave your jap plates on maybee take some uk plates with you to keep the tester happy.
