I work with a guy who is currently detached to the Middle East & I am looking after his car whilst he is away.
I drove it for the first time last night, so thought I would write down a few thoughts...
I have only been in one once before (Olly_RK9's uncles) & was very impressed with its power & composure. (REVO remapped)
My friends car has similarly been treated to an ECU "tuning box" & beefier rear ARB, so power is around 170BHP with maybe 250lbs/ft+ of Torque..? (PLENTY is how i would describe it)
Driving the car it is quiet & refined, save for the normal diesel clatter when cold. It hits boost around 1500RPM then holds it strongly to 3000rpm, with a serious amount of shove in the back. After this the power/accelaration seemed to tail off (unlike the REVO'd car)
The brakes felt noticeably spongy & with a long pedal. I thought this may have been due to the car being sat for 3 weeks prior to my drive, though they really failed to improve a great deal....hmm Might have to speak to the owner.....
Compared to a VTEC, the driving experience is very different. You need to drive on the Torque of the engine. No redlining required, just use the smooth torque from 1500-3000rpm. For swift progress, you need to use the gears to keep the RPM's in that range, but luckily with a 6spd box it is reasonably simple to do. With all that torque, traction is an issue if the surface is less than bone-dry...sensible use of right-foot required
On my 50 mile commute, the car returned ~50MPG. Very reasonable given the mixed driving & weight of the car i thought..& 20 more than i get with the ITR
Given the kerbweight is ~1300kgs the car felt very lively & overall i was impressed with its pace point-to-point...
Feedback through the steering is more than adequate (often criticised), though no match for a Type-R. The wheel itself could do with being a bit chunkier though...
I was also surprised/concerned that the clutch felt SO light & not really confidence inspiring underfoot. It felt almost like a small amount of abuse/bad treatment would make it slip...
Overall, they are a very effective car on the road, & not dissimilar to a Type-R in a straight-line. However, the driving experience is still remote in comparison. Id say there would be little difference in pace across country, but the Type-R wins on its "grin" factor....
Beware that these things shift when on boost though...easy to get caught out by one if you arent careful
