Okay guys, as the title reads, my rear arches are rusted and starting to let go.

i bought my EJ9 for 600quid. so not overly keen on spending massive money on the body work.

i was wondering what your suggestions might be for dealing with my rusted arches? maybe fibreglass and filler them?

or can any member suggest any reaosnable prices for cutting out the rust and welding in plate?

any help would be much appreciated.

i had to get mine done recently, if its rusting right threw then they deffo need cut out and new arches/plates of some sort welded on.

Lol man get some fiberglass and cover all up and paint it with rust eater and ur sorted

can guarantee the rust will just come back threw eventually!!

see i much prefer the sound of Sarkel's take on my situation.

if it was an EK9 or a del-sol or ITR id probably get it all done properly. but seeing as its only a D14 EJ9 i dont really see the point in spending lots of money on it.

yeh i want it to look nice for me to drive for a year or a bit more but its never going to be an imaculate show winner! lol

cheers sarkel.

any other views on this guys?

aw cool mate yeah totally understand what you mean in the way of it not really being cost effective for the EJ9 lol

It's not just the outer arch which will be rusted, also the inner arch and perhaps some of the sill will also be rusted. I've nearly finished replacing the inner and outer arch on my EG4 and even if you do it cheaply but properly it's expensive. You'd need two outer arches (£60), some 0.9mm steel for the inner arch (£20) but then you also need a mig welder to weld it in place. If you were to carefully cut it all out and get the arch fitted in place then you could get a mobile welder to do it, probably like a couple hours work. Then get some solvent base-coat which is around £11 per 400ml can and will do a rear arch easily and then I used Upol 1k Acrylic clear-coat with a spray gun over it. You'll also need some filler and a good eye to ensure it's all perfect before paint as I found it's very easy to miss places and end up with a wavy panel even if you use a guide coat!

If you do it with fiberglass properly, it'll be as much of a pain in the ass as metal as you'll still need to paint it and fill it etc.

cheers champ white, good insite for me there fella.

like i said earlier though, i cant justify spending like 200-300 quid for rear arch replacements when the car is only worth about 600.

im having my sills welded on saturday actually 70 quid as my jacking point collapsed last week.
the arches arnt essential atm but they will need doing

I would have thought spending money or renovating the chassis and arches would have put value on the car..
example you bought your EJ for £600 with Rusty/Rotten arches... If it had clean/solid arches it would have been worth £800 + surely. well that'd be the way i look at it..

good luck with your work though jarvis :nice: getting nicely stuck in to this now

yeh i suppose theres that way of looking at it too. hoever in a year or so when i come to sell it, i doubt it will be worth more than 800. will be high mileage by then also with the amount of commuting i do.

another thought.

are there any companys out there that do "body kits" for the ek?

i know what your all thinking. NOOOOOO!!!!!! hahah but i wouldnt put a kit on.

Maybe just some fibreglass overlay arches. bond them on, smooth them into the bodywork and paint. asif they were never there................

If it is so rusted that a jacking point collapsed I wouldn't bother spending the money as there is probably a load of rot in the car. Don't bother with bonding arches on. Just fiberglass over any holes, fill and paint. Amazing what you can do with enough filler! They also make a special fiberglass-like filler for bridging gaps but never used it so can't comment on how well it works.

Cheers champ white.

Sounds like fibre glass and bonding is the way to go really. Will get it done sooner or later and show you guys my progress when I get round to them :)

Thanks guys
