petrol guage problem?

I bought the car and since I bought it I've had problems, one day I was sitting in the car trying to figure out what's the problem.
I had the car off but ignition on and the petrol guage was going up, I turned the Car on and then immediately it started to drop back to where it was before.
I turned it back off and it started to go back up a again help please..
Any ideas what it is???

Have you tried opening up the fuel tank and checking the fuel sensor is all working correctly?

I haven't tried anything yet I haven't had the time and Ive been told about 3 different thing, I suspected it would be the sensor just wanted to see if anyone has experienced the same problem so I could save time and money
