I've been pretty much confused the last few weeks.. I have a friend that has an EK4 facelift Vti and while I was discussing with him about my project (ej9) he told me that usually original Vti's are better than conversion when it's on same ps. He also told me that he had knocked off conversions BUT however he doesn't know the real reason. So my question is simple: Do original Vti's beat conversion's?:nerv:

a vti will be better than a 1.4 converted to b16 as it has front and rear arb's as standard, rear discs, better suspension, larger exhaust system,More bracing etc if you wanted to be on par with a vti ud have to upgrade your exhaust system and if your thinking of doing it make sure you upgrade the brakes, stability aswell or its just not safe

If done right a conversion can be just as good or even better. You just need to make sure you change everything needed and do it properly. Obviously for example if you drop a b16a into an ej9 you would have the power but it would not be the same. All you would have is the engine. The chassis is weaker cold be upgraded(ASR), also suspension, brakes etc all need to be included when doing something like this. On a standard ek4 it would come already with the upgrades as standard that you would have to ad to a ej9.

Some great projects have been done on here you should check them out and get a better idea! Hope this helps

I know that brakes, abs, strut bars and suspension should be placed but what he meant was that conversions are just slower..! And it's hard for me to believe as what I have for conversion in my mind (FULL CONVERSION)

it should be the other way around isnt it ? due to the fact that is should be lighter than a vti. please somebody comfirm if im wrong

Well it depends what planning to do… if your only planning to change the engine then yes the normal one will be better.
But if your planning on changing the engine now and then upgrading the rest with after market stuff then you might as well just change the engine now and leave the rest for later.

usually the conversions are FASTER... the reason behind this is stock for "stock"(conversion), the conversion is tuned better.
take a vti with induction, header and full exhaust on stock ecu and put it against a conversion(even if its in and ek3 not ej9,(with induction, header and exhaust)) and most of the time you will the see the conversion run ahead purely becuase with the aftermarket management(provided that u using aftermarket instead of stock which is what commonly happens here in SA) the engine can be tuned better yeilding better gains.
even if it is a stock ecu, the weight difference plays its part but then it may be a closer contest.

However as has been said, you will find other aspects that are not better, like suspension etc so it would have to be upgraded if you wanted to 'compete/be on the same level' as a normal vti.

depends entirely how much of the conversion has been done and what modifications have been done to both! Imo the money wasted in getting a ej to a ek4 level is pointless. I'd rather just buy a clean ek4!

I'm in that dilemma for ever! Built or bought? But thankfully I'm going for built.. Same money (about 15k), better car by all means (cleaner, new parts and most of all I slowly learn everything about my car). Thanks guys for the help!

with 15k you would destroy any vti, im a big believer in built 'not bought' that way you know everything about the car and with the right parts can build a car far superior to any stock ek9

with 15k id scrap the vti conversion id be going k20 and willwood brakes :).The money your going to spend on making the conversion as good as a vti you would be better buying a vti.And who's to say you cant build your vti so it wouldnt be just bought.

true that... k20 ek

Well 15k is the limit with all conversions be needed, from Recaro seats to Spoon exhaust, full respray and AEM ECU.. The problem is that ek4 00 here in Greece cost 9k-10k and I believe it's too much. So I'm going for a really clean and tidy b16 or b18 conversion. Something else of Greece is that we don't have roads neither tracks for an ek k20. Even Peugeot Rallyes are too much for us that we can't reach them to their limits! We don't have proper standards for a good car.
