need help!

I bought a 96 civic dx hatch usdm, but the engine is a d15b8. If I'm correct its off a 95 civic CD. Im not sure but I think it should of have a d16y engine right? I did a tune up and asked for the 95 parts like sparks plugs but didn't fit so I asked for the 96 parts and they fit. How would I findout if he just changed the block and keeled the the d16 head? Its a nnone vtec. The intake manifold is pointing up and there's a big plastic air box on top of it. Just want to make sure what kind of frankestine he was runing and if it was really meant to be in this car. Any help would be greatly appreciated
 
it sound to me like it has d15 block with d16 head it's a common swap but pointless if you dont use a vtec head
 
Do you guys have any tips or recommendations because I'm trying to set up my Ek for crayon driving need someone to point me in the right direction in engine setup and suspension setup. When it comes to technical stuff in clueless but I love driving.
