Hi guys got my ek9 three days ago and I love it, it has a custom 2.5" cat back exhaust, jasma approved manifold and a password jdm carbon filter..
it pulls well in all the gears and drives fine BUT..

i had a play up an A road with a friend is his 9 and another friend in a crx.

the other 9 has a top fuel induction kit, jasma approved manifold and a 5zigen cat back.
the crx is a b16a2 with b18cr cams, aftermarket intake manifold, aftermarket exhaust manifold, long arm induction and completely stripped out..
we were all expecting an even run but that wasn't the case.
I got completely left behind from the go, they just kept pulling and pulling away from me so much they had to slow down and wait for me after about a mile of driving..
why is mine so slow? I assumed that having the same mods as the other 9 it was be generally about the same.
should i get the timing changed? It had a service not too long ago so i doubt the oil and plugs are bad yet.
really confused me as everything looks in place, oil level topped up and it runs perfect..
any advice would be great, many thanks

Best thing you ca. Do is get it on a rolling road and see what it says? Or compression test it?

is the compression was low would vtec not engage properly? I'm quite new to honda so bare with me lol..

i'm gonna take it to a friend tomorrow who can hopefully have a quick look at it, what about timing? would that cause such a drastic change in performance if it was out?
thanks!

Compression test would enable you to determine if anything is wrong internally in the engine. such as piston rings, valve stem seals etc.

Timing could be a cause if it has slipped a couple of teeth, or theirs could be stroked without actually knowing it. :secret:

ah ok cheers, i'm going to get them tested tomorrow..
na i'd know if either of them had big work done haha!

Nah vtec would still work. It's not like the engine has no compression just not a lot.
I doubt the timing is out, does it have timing gears or just stock can gear?
Can always check it to be sure.
No doubt this is the real reason the car was sold. I read the advert and an insurance mix up doesn't really wash tbh

In all honesty a stripped crx will do most stuff due to weighing in at around 780-800kg stripped.

yeah fair enough, it's only standard cam gear.
it's not gonna bother me if it's just little things cause I want to completely change the car anyway..
i'll get the compression test done tomorrow if that comes out ok then i'll service the car, get the valve clearances done, fuel filter, then maybe get the timing checked..
if that doesn't sort it i'll k20 the ba*tard haha..

My Ek9 I bought was stroked and the owner I bought it off had no idea. Could of come from Japan like it pal.

Very true that!

yeah fair shout, right just had a chat with the guy in the crx. he reckons my vtec is engaging but not making it pull any harder if that makes sense..
I hope this isn't gonna open a can of worms :/

Good excuse to k20 it then!
Can you here the crossover? the power would die right off if it wasnt switching cam.

yeah crossover is really loud, i'm just gonna get it compression tested then replace most of the serviceable items, hopefully it turns out ok

Yeah no doubt you'll find the problem if ther is one with Afew tests. Out of interest how far behind we're you? Like 5 car lengths or?

9's not really quick in a straight line. I really missed the TQ of my clio 172

He was racing another nine tho

i wish i was 5 car lengths behind, it was that bad..
yeah i like the all round package of the ek9 but i just can't help be a bit annoyed by the fact i didn't even keep up with them.. if something is wrong i want to get it sorted asap so i can start saving for bits for track time next year..

I drove his car today n it don't feel like vtec is pulling as hard as my ek9 I kept with the crx then had to lift off but was car length ahead if that but keirans ek9 was....... How do u out this 15 car lengths behind maybe more :/ we raced again even with me missing 3rd gear dropping out of vtec I still managed to get bk Into vtec and pull from him with out him getting close to passing me :/

So certainly an issue ther. Don't really want to track it without knowing the issue as you said. Defo worth checking the compression, if that's all good then I'd get it on a rolling road and check the fuelling? Wouldn't have thought it would be out enough to make that much of a difference tho.
Compression test is where the answer is I think. I'm sure compression should be 220 ish per cylinder,

yeah thanks, what could be the cause of low compression then? The car runs fine, doesn't play up as far as i know and doesn't excessively smoke in or out of vtec.
