Hi guys I'm recently back from a years working holiday in Australia. Im a fully qualified mechanic with 5 years experience and my MOT testing licence. Im looking to go self employed with a lot of peed off potential customers with local garage prices/customer relations. The advice I'm really after is which vehicle i know i should be sensible and get a van but I'm kinda looking for a compromise car/van must be Japanese I'm swaying towards a civic aerodeck or a HRV i love Honda's and they're reliability I've had 5, any suggestions please feel free! Also any advice from anyone doing/done this venture before would be massively appreciated. Thanks Oliver

Id go for a proper van you will end up overloading an estate car. Also you will need public liability cover and there are rules against working at the side of the road.

Getting a small unit would make it easier in the long run imo and just offer collection service

^^ this.

Rent or build a unit with some parking outside, you,ll make more money than being mobile, gearbox, timing belts clutches etc are alot easier done on a lift

Remember you will want/ need

Trade insurance for test drives/ collection
Motorfactors accounts to get parts quick with a line of credit
Waste disposal
Diagnostics kit
Contacts for the jobs you cant do
A local mot station
Tyre shop

Then you can provide everything as one service and just sub out work if you have reliable contacts.

Hey guys thanks for your responses i went sensible and got a 2010 kangoo haha not like me as usually i won't touch french vehicles with a barge pole but having worked in a garage with one of these it fitted the bill nicely. Dannyboy205 i have all the above that you listed i live on an island in Scotland and can change tyres myself have a manual tyre machine. The plan is to get my own place with a lift ect but for now I'm just working towards that. The next dilemma is tool storage i have an american pro sealey box and intermediate and i hate it cheap quality, drawers bend the lock doesn't work and the drawers stay recessed around 3 inches when fully opened! being in a vehicle i need a box with individual locking drawers. Ive been looking at clarkes range of locking drawers and also the halfords industrial with very good reviews I'm just wondering what you guys have? recommend? cheers!!!!

Tbh for toolboxes I would only use mac tools they are by far the best but you will pay alot for one
