If you had £10k to spend, what car would you get?

Right so for the past few weeks i've been looking about for a new car. I've always wanted an EK9 but insurance is still steep. EP3 insurance is steep as well. Although i wouldn't mind paying a bit more for insurance if its a really nice example. Been looking at cars ranging from DC2, Audi A4/8 and Bmw's. Was close to getting a CRZ but problem is its not practical enough due to it being more of a two seater car. And the past few days i've had my eyes on an FN2 as insurance is pretty good compared to the 9.

I need something with power, reliability and good mpg. Whatever i'm going for will be stuck with me for a good few years. But my problem is, I can't decide what i want. My first choice atm is the FN2, its new, looks good and compared to my current ek3 its a lot faster too.

So back to my question.
If you were to get a loan for £10k, what would you buy?

I'd wait until the insurance was reasonable and get something alittle more special than an fn2.
Just my opinion like.

Nissan Silvia S15 Spec R, because they are RWD, turbo'd and they are damn cool

My only problem is, i can't wait lol my ek3 is kinda :angry2: so ideally i need another car as soon as.. Plus i'm kind of bored of it regardless as it is causing problems, theres Type R's getting better mpg than i do and i'm the one with the eco civic :(( Don't want to chuck more money into it getting fixed as its in really bad condition..

What would you buy with 10k?

10k is a lot of cash. I'd try to buy something that's only going to be worth the same or more money after Afew years.
Maybe r33 gtr?
Insurance is the issue so not like you can get something like that.
So maybe a decent deisel?
Or get a smaller loan to get you by until you can insure something else?
Can get some nice cars for Afew k now.

too many good cars available for 10k, i will have to go for one of the fq evos

I wouldn't be spending a £10k loan on a car,
Buy a cheap civic for a grand and save up :)

you have generally have following options:

1) Buy a newish car, lose a load of cash in depreciation

2) Buy a brand new car - get a loan on top of the 10k you have saved up. Lose even more cash in depreciation and be stuck with having to pay back the loan for a number of years

3) As someone above already said - Get a car that you will be able to sell for the same or maybe even more money in the future. I have been looking at e30 M3 for my dad who wants one as a weekend toy, and he knows that the price can only go up. I'm sure there are old cars that are rare and awesome yet practical enough to drive every day.

4) Keep the Civic, get an EK9 in a couple of years, you will only need half the cash you already have for that. Then take the remaining 5k, and do as you wish - add it to the deposit money for your mortgage, travel round the World, spend it all on the engine, get some ultimate suspension.... Whatever!

I know we all have personal preferences, but I know I would not chose options one or two. I will only spend 10k on a car once I've moved into my own house, have a "secure" job etc... As far as new cars go, that, if ever, I will get when I get old and will be at the point where I can't be arsed spending weekends lying on my back with engine oil dripping on my face... To a degree we all copy our parents as we will have all been raised in a different way. My dad bought his first brand new car when he was 50. He could have bought one a lot earlier, but preferred to try as many different cars as he could and he had some truly awesome cars over the years! So I reckon I will be following his example and I would advice you to the same. Remember - Car is (almost) never a good investment.

If you want an ek9 like you say, then 10k is more than enough for a nice one, and I doubt you would spend it all even after insuring it too.

"I need something with power, reliability and good mpg."

tl/dr BMW 120d

Both are relative terms, but with less than 200 bhp and 30ish mpg, I'm not sure how type-r's fit your requirements.
I love my 9 to bits, but it wouldn't have been something I looked at if power and mpg were my priorities.

My mate has run a FN2 for past few years (standard except cat-back and fast road geo set-up), averages about 28mpg and that's nearly all town driving, not even spirited B-road blasting. Also despite the fact it felt plenty quick enough to him on test drive, only took few weeks of ownership before he was looking at supercharging it. I found FN2 very bland after my 9, with very little common DNA bar the red badge, seemed to lack Type-r to me.

My brother just p/x his evo 7 for a BMW 123d, although your 10k budget wouldn't quite cover that, you could happily get a 120 and remap it. Apart from 0-60, his bmw walks away from 9, plus it's comfortable, quieter, got awesome hi-fi, heated seats, almost twice range on a tank, almost twice the mpg, etc.

All that being said, the EK9 is a very special little car. If you want one, you really should get one. Yes they are expensive to insure, but often it's the 1st year that's a big hit if they don't feel you have experience in similar performance vehicle.

With a buget of £10k you should easily be able to afford to buy a 9 and insure it.
Dunx (fastjapcars.com) who has imported a massive amount of 9's has a very clean vsm Facelift for under £6k, leaving over £4k to insure and start filling the tank.

Back to your question, what would I buy.

What I would think about getting with 10k. All going to be insurance killers though.

Datsun 240z (for restoration + sr/rb swap) / S15 Varietta / E46 M3 /
Supercharged DC5 (on pistonheads £10,500) / S2000 with some kind forced induction / Lotus Elise / Mint RX7 / R33 GTR / R34 GTT / 350z / 'Cleanish' AE86

or I could happily spend 10k on my 9 and still have things left to do...

BMW E60 530d can be had for good money now and it ticks all your boxes

Although as said an ek9 or dc2 is well worth going for (unless your doing 90% pf your driving on motorways)

i know every ones going to hate me, how about a starlet gt its a 1.3 turbo a good run around car can be a beast as well if you spend a bit in it, cheap tax cheap insurance all in all its still a jap car which is still reliable only in my own opinion.

Well done everyone,
Your suggestions for insurance friendly cars are brilliant;
S15, e46 m3, s2000, even a highly modded ek9 when he can't insure a standar one ....
Ideal for someone struggling to insure something!

You tell em jake! Lol
I think a starlet isn't a bad idea, as they're small engine small cars. But can be seriously quick.
But I would personally get an ek4.
I was shocked how cheap they are to insure for myself.
I reckon you could buy a decent one and insure it for 5 grand.
Then use the other 5 for mods, and you'd have a pretty fast car that should be able to keep up with a stock 9 pretty easily, if not beat it.
Just my opinion of course.
