So i have been using a hire car for a few days, now they stipulated when they dropped the car off to return the fuel to a similar level when returning.

The car was in my possesion from 24/11/12 to 05/12/12, during this period I covered around 180miles.

The car arrived with around a 1/3rd of a tank of fuel and went back with a similar level, after putting in £30 whilst using it over the period i had it.

Today i recieved an invoice for £35.74 (25.01litres) of fuel, the car was a vauxhall astra and the tank is only 52l so this amount is half a tank.

Now £30 = around 23litres or 5.2 gallons meaning the car averaged 33MPG an acceptable figure whilst in my possesion.

The problem is i'm going to get stung for this invoice, the car was driven away from where it was collected from and filled up 38miles away (direct route according to Google)

I didnt sign the collection documents as i left the car at the garage.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

MANY MANY THANKS

Did you keep the receipt you topped up with? Chances are that the guy who took the car filled up his own jerrycan on your expense. If you have proof then they will refund you. If not then unless u didnt sign the agreement at end of rental they can't do ****. I worked for a Hirer company for a year so I know that process all to well lol.

I never signed when the car was collected, I left it at the garage, so on the copy there is no signature. I have no receipt but have a bank statement showing I paid for fuel.

Sorry to hear your having problems Ash, hate it when people try to rip you off. I would have thought a bank statement should suffice though? Its not written in small print anywhere that it has to be returned with a full tank or anything?

This is why a hire car should be dropped of with next to nothing in. So if you want to use the car you have to put the fuel in.
Is it a small hire firm? Wouldn't surprise me if its a small firms little scam to make some money.

The driver who dropped it off was great, he said make sure its at a similar level. Lets be honest you'd struggle to make it the same using just the gauge on the dash.

The company is Kindertons accident management.

Gonna contact my insurance company about this.

My original plan was to ignore it, but they have my credit card details, so may have to contact the bank and cancel my card

No doubt you paid a credit card deposit on the hire car?
Old van hire firm I used to work for used to freeze a deposit still in your account and if something was broken on the van they'd take the deposit.

No deposit paid

Spoke to management regards the invoice, explained the above and they have cancelled it :-D more fuel for the 9 now :-D
