The mention above of a belt getting tighter - this is possible.
Most materials expand when hot - but not all.
Drive belts use (usually) polyester re-inforcement in the rubber, but some premium ones use Kevlar which has a negative coeeficient of thermal expansion. - It shrinks when hot.
It might be the belt you mentioned had kevlar reinforcement.
