well lads i am currently building a da integra and at the minute i have no engine in it but i have both my interior and engine loom connected. i wanted to see if i could get my ignition on and my lights ect so i connected a battery to the engine loom and grounded what i could. problem is when i connected the terminals i would get a big spark but i eventually got them on ok but nothing was working. so i put power directly to the plug of the lights and the lights came on so that must mean my earths are ok just a problem getting power to the switch. so i then set about looking for a short. i wanted to do this with a multimeter and bridge the prongs of the multimeter to the negative of the battery and the negative of the loom while the positive is connected to the battery. then start pulling fuses until the amps drop so i can see what circuit has my short. but when i went to do this i got yet another big spark and the leads of my multimeter got really hot. and now if i connect my multimeter to my battery without a loom on it its reading 12.3 volts but as soon as i connect the loom it sparks and it wont even read any volts on the battery ??? anyone any ideas its like the loom is making the battery not work somehow ? any help appreciated

If you're looking for a short I wouldn't be doing it with the power on.

Switch your multimeter to the ohms setting and do a continuity check on each of the wires to earth.

I think you may have burned some insulation off and possibly putting 12v straight to earth.

Also I'd advise checking the battery with a drop tester.
