i have recently found that my cars steering was becoming very loose and very light. upon investigation i thought i needed to replace ball joint etc. found that i need to replace some drop links but even this did not cure it.

soon after my brother who also owns an ek9 was getting the same thing. i tested his car round the twisties and was indeed the same but not as worse.

i replaced my steering fluid with oem stuff and bled the brakes and clutch and looked round the rack.

came across this article:

streeting rack adjustment to fix any loose steering??
I was wondering if anyone has performed this adjustment and what was the outcome of doing it was? where you guys successful? were you happy with the adjustment done? thanks guys

Steering Adjustment

If your car has lost that nice silky, smooth steering feel it had when it was new, perhaps a rack adjustment might help. I noticed on previous Hondas I have owned that the steering becomes 'light' as the cars got older. Also, some cars developed a rattle when driven on bumpy roads.

There is an adjustment you can do that will take the 'slop' out of the steering rack. After you have blocked, raised, and put your car on jackstands, crawl under and find the steering rack. (It's that thing that your steering column connects to under your car.)

Along the top side of the rack there is an adjustment screw with a giant lock nut (40mm) you will have to loosen. Honda sells a wrench, of course, but you can either make a long slender 40mm box wrench of your own or use a hammer and a punch to loosen the lock nut.

Once loose, turn the adjuster in until it bottoms, then retighten the lock nut. You may have to do this procedure a few times to get it just right as this is one of those things that works best by trial and error. What I found was a much better feel for the road and a much smoother steering input. Happy strafing!!

that was writen back in 96-97. since then, I've always checked my steering rack on every H/A I've owned.

if you have the manual, it is described on page 17-21... rack guide adjustment.

if your steering is feeling "loose", this will definately help.

after seeing this i had a look and found the adjustment. i just want to know if anyone else has done this? and what it actually adjusts?

i just find it wierd as i never came across steering rack adjustment before and my other cars have no such adjustment. cheers for your help

also i hope this has helped a few people out as i think this is an important subject that i don't think has been covered. going to adjust mine this coming week an i will update you on what the difference is.

cant find the 40mm tool to loosen the lock nut . can anyone give me the part number as honda are a bit vague on the tool. cheers

I'll check for the tool part no. in the workshop manual, alternatively google search for the civic workshop manual and download the PDF, very very helpful

Basically your rack is supported on the passenger side by the end cap which seals your rack

Drives side it is supported by a spring loaded sleeve that rests on the rack

The adjustment screw preloads the sleeve against the rack to support it

Pretty sure the oem spec is to tighten to 25Nm and then back off 20 degrees and then tighten locknut

I did the adjustment when I had the rack out removing the power steering, so I just used a vice to tighten the 40mm nut....

cheers for your help. will be doing this once the weather has cleared up and when i find the tool to slacken the lock nut. alternatively ill make one cheers

Im experiencing the same thing - though my PS pump was on its way out! :(

Could you please take some pictures of where this 40mm nut is? Or take some pictures when you do the adjustment yourself, and let us know how it feels after?

Cheers Josh..

i'm certain the nut is on the back of the rack between the sub frame, did the same adjustment on my eg as i had very loosed steering. there is enough space to get a hammer and punch in to undo the lock nut.
mine's only took a couple of taps to undo but a few attempts to get the steering right again[ first attempt was too tight and wheels wouldn't self centre]

i had both loose feeling on my car and some knocks on bumpy roads.
i changed rack ends and rods things get better but still there is a small knock and a small gap/play on my steering wheel
any ideas ?

i need to give it a check soon.

yeah thats the one i tightened, just back off the lock nut and turn the smaller one a bit till the freeplay is gone
