yes the b16 is probs one the highest making output engine and tbh its unlikely to be matched in a modern day engine in NA form, with everyone going turbo it looks like the b16 will remain the one of the most powerful 1.6 there has been

The EK9 is the best, with more power and better performance, nicer interior also. (Although the Pulsar N1 trumps it in the power stakes) The others are all decent cars, especially when compared to UK hot hatches of the time.

I remember the EK9 got picked up in the press, saw it on 5th Gear, think it had a shootout in Autocar.

The EK9 is quite popular over here when compared with the others, always see a few for sale. Hardly ever see any of the others about. I wonder why the EK9 got taken to the hearts of UK drivers and the others never?

I've owned 2 Toyota Levins in the past and they are great. :drive:

Its because us brits Demand a drivers car and the EK9 delivers perfectly :D the fact its RHD when imported also is great as remember most of europe drive on the left ;)

I agree, the B16b isn't likely to be improved upon with regards to specific out put from a 1.6. Emissions regulations see to that. The Pulsar VZR-N1 did top it at 200bhp but it was quite a small production run. Think it was only 200 made.
 
that pulsar interests me, didnt realise the b16 wasnt the most powerful 1.6 in NA form

did it have variable timing?
 
I don't know much about them to be honest, pretty sure you'd need at variable valve timing on at least the inlet cam to make that power and still be driveable. Would like one.

The Pulsar N1 aint all that its made out to be , drove many of them and raced them when i had me old 9 and smoked them , there nothing near as aggressive as the EK9's and they dont look half as good inside or out !!!

Ill put it this way 200 bhp ek9 -v- 200bhp Vzr n1, Ek9 Wins Hands Down:win:

fair enough the renaults cant match the durability of the hondas but they are still bloody good, im considering dropping my plans to own a ek9 and buy a clio 182, same sort of performance for a third of the price :drive:
 
it Its crazy reading you guys loved ek9,s growing n that i never heard of 1 untill around a month or 2 before i bought mine nearly 3 years ago i was saving up for a astra gsi turbo but the 2nd i saw it i bought it the japanese cars are their own legue just cant compare to any others

just had a read through.

ek9 over 182 ALLLL day long. you say third of the cost but tbh you can get some steals on the 9's.


when ive played with my mates 182, the 9 doesnt struggle
