EK9 feeling a bit slow lower down....

Just bought an EK9 on impulse! Car seems a bit slow before vtec kicks in. Driven a few EK4s and they feel a bit more gutsy lower down. Are type rs supposed to be this way?
BTW my clutch is worn and will be getting it changed. Was stood for a year or so before I bought it. Has an AEM style induction kit.
Also the exhaust pipe is wrapped just before it reaches back box by about a foot length of heat wrapping which looks like its covering a bit of rust.

What you guys think?
Is the clutch a limiting factor here? It doesnts lip or anything but is quite worn and biting point is high.

Or is the EK9 just not that great before vtec?

Couple of more things.. Will try and keep it as brief as possible!
Been to garage, mechanic called a couple of places and I have the option of fitting an Exedy clutch or a blue print. Blue print is £40 more.

Need a good exhaust system which doesn't sound too loud but can give good gains. Would custom be best? Looking at getting one made at Pro speed Cardiff. Or a branded exhaust like Mugen/5-zigen etc would be better?

Constructive feedback Much appreciated! :))

I noticed the feeling of less torque when moving from ek4 to ek9. Took a while to get used to but the greater increase in power once over 5800 made up for it. A shorter final drive will also help with the lack of torque feeling.

Is the AEM induction kit the "long arm" version, the one which you cant see the filter? if so they are known to make power up top but i found them terrible down low in the revs.
Standard airbox is a good set up.

The oem ITR clutch is a good bit of kit and we can supply it also if interested :nice:

^^^ I Recently purchaced an OEM ITR clutch from Simauto ^^^

Best price i could find for a genuine Honda ITR clutch.

how much is your clutch kit mate?

What is wrong with your EK9s?
I own both, EK4 and 9.
EK4's engine should be way healthier as its done half the mileage of my 9.
The EK4 is so slow compared to my 9.
The difference is massive.
Ok I have mani, exhaust, intake blah blah blah.
But the difference is huge!
The EK4 is nice and smooth but just has no urgency.
After driving the 9 for a little while and then jumping into the EK4, it's a totally different car. The 9 just wants to go go go.
That's my opinion anyway.
Maybe my EK4 is broken...

Yeh I would say your EK4 is broken....

B16b has crap tourqe, that's the problem!

I don't think it does though, compared to other 1.6L engines it's quite good on torque. I think it just has so much of the power up the top down below it has the illusion of feeling slow when really it's just as good as any other 1.6L engine.

Has the car been serviced? If it's been sitting for a year I gather it's not going to be running it's best without having a full service cracked on it.

Try a new set of plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm. as b series engines rely on a good quality spark.
Can effect bottom end performance more than top on some cases due to high compression.

I think B16B's have great torque, when you think it is only a 1,6. Mine was dynoed to 177 nm = 130,5 ft lbs

Yeah but most other 1.6L engines have say around 120-140bhp and about 120-125 ft lbs therfore in comparison, the torque of the b16b is pretty low in considering its power of 185ps and only 118 ft lbs, obviously we all know they dont make the claimed 185 but still...

Agree with this 100%
