Haha man it looks so clean! It's absolutely minging in there now after grinding away! Anyway, had to remove these brackets, just used a spot weld drill bit;

Could finally mock up the cage, took me an hour and a half to unwrap it all!

So I could start locating the footplates which is where I'm at now :)

Well managed to get to full cage bolted together and down to the shell. Welded in 3 of the 7 footplates and ran out of gas! Damnit, so picked up some more and I'll crack on tomorrow.

This was the only pic I got of the main loop footplate tacked it. Welding was a bit of a nightmare thanks to the seam sealer I just could get out catching fire and oxidising the welds so most of it looks **** :(

Finally got the cage done today, well 90%, but it's done enough for now!

First off, I got all the footplates in paint. I used Acid 8 as a primer then went over the top with good old Hammerite. The whole floor needs doing again after the welding but I'll have to do that some other time!

Whilst I waited for the paint to dry I decided I had earned a 'feel good job'. Which are easy jobs to break up the **** ones, so mostly bolt on's ;)

The first one being a P:Word JDM front brace;

With the paint dry I could bolt the cage in for the last time! It went together pretty straight forward;

And was pleased to see that the doors still shut with the door cards on! So I will be keeping them even after stripping the guts out of the doors. For the sake of a few kilo's I don't mind :)

Next it was time to cut up and fit the dash. Was pretty simple but will need to make plates to tidy up the area where the cage cuts through the dash. I also completely stripped out the dash loom. All this it has now is the instrument cluster, clock, hazards and heater. Lost the fogs, heated rear screen, electric mirror's, stereo, and sunroof wiring;

With the dash in it was a simple case of putting everything back together;

And that's about it. The car was looking pretty sweet sat there so took a few selfies ;)

Nice mate.
How come you went for a bolt on in stead of welding it in?

I don't have the welding skills for a full weld in, plus if I stack it in this I may be able to transfer the cage to a new shell.

Also I picked up this one pretty cheap ;)

To be honest I'm quite impressed with the fit of the Safety Devices cage. It's very well made and pretty tight against the pillars, a weld in would one would be much better but for the price I couldn't beat this :)

Fair enough mate :) My half cage is a bolt on as well.
Atleast if you wanted to see it you would have a much bigger market than a caged car :)
When we meeting up then ;)

Yeh man, although if it even came to selling I would have to break it, worth far more that way and another plus with a bolt in ;)

Soon as I'm ready to track we'll have to have a go :drive:

Another weekends work on the car has just flown by although it has been productive. I like productive :D

The next job on the looonng list was to get the polycarbonate window kit in. The kit was purchased for a great price from a company called Templar Performance, they advertise themselves or the kit very well, but for the price they are spot on.

The first job clearly was to get all of the glass out. Easy I thought, well the doors and tailgate were however the rear quarters were not! After trying many different ideas, blades kept getting stuck, lock wire kept snapping - I was at the point of just smashing it out until I had the genius idea of using the fuel flap release cable which is just removed. Cutting that open and using the braided inner cable cut through that glue like a knife through butter, each window took five minutes!

So, here's the rear quarter and tailgate out;

I then cleaned out all the left over sealant and gunk and gave it a fresh lick of paint due to scrubbing down to bare metal;

and the new one bonded in. The windows come pre-painted with the black borders and I refitted the edge trim;

The tailgate window was an easy job, just had to cut out the bolt holes and bolt in on. I also bonded on the lower rubber seal. Just need to get some fasteners to hold it down!

Moving onto the doors I took the opportunity to gut out the inner skin, wiring, electric window gubbins but I wanted to strip it so I could still use the door cards;

Window bonded in, also comes prefitted with the sliders;

Job done :)

Another job I had to sort out was locating the ECU. After fitting the roll cage it got in the way of the standard ECU location. I did want to mount it up against the firewall but with the surface being far from flat it would have been a nightmare to fab something up. Instead I mounted it into the glovebox location using and old ally footplate that Ive had laying around for ages;

So that's it for this instalment. Next job will be fitting the new gearbox along with a new clutch and Fidanza flywheel. Not sure when I'll get to do that though :(

Nice update! Should be a few kg saved on the windows and motors

Thanks chaps!

Apologies for the lack of updates, not a lot has gone on recently. However I have pencilled in a weekend in 2 weeks time to get some major work done!

Also I have bought a house which has a perfect sized garage/workshop so the car will finally have a home and I will be able to make some serious progress with the car. Looking to be moving in early June :)

As far as weight goes, I would imagine its currently around the 950Kg mark, maybe less. I would like to hit 900Kg, see how it goes :)
