DIY Threads

I was looking to add build threads on simple jobs I've been doing recently; track rods, lower ball joints etc. ... But having looked through some of the feedback on current build threads in the section, I'm less inclined to do so now.

The reason I'd like to share my learning's is to give something back to the wealth of knowledge I've trawled through and used on line.

I'm not a trained mechanic nor have I grown in an environment where I've been able to learn about mechanics from people around me, so the internet and knowledge shared by people on it has been my main source of education/training.

I try to do what common sense tells me is right and if I'm unsure research some more... but, many times I am 'winging' it - normally as I don't have the specific tool or machinery to do the job 'correctly'. Yes, I've built up a decent collection of tools over the years - often dictated by the job at hand (e.g. torque wrench, spring compressor, angle grinder etc.) .. but some tools I don't yet have the money, space or regular usage need to justify buying, which leads to my necessity to wing it at times (I could pay for someone else with these capabilities to do the job for me, but that would defeat the point of learning and doing the job myself).

But.. I can totally appreciate that if people share build knowledge that is potentially damaging to either person or vehicle, or in the worst case other road users, then this information should be edited/deleted and feedback given constructively so people can do the job properly and safely in the future based on the knowledge shared.

What I'm getting to really is whether there's any way to have a process where DIY threads can be previewed by moderators or vip members, who have the knowledge/training to help ensure the content of the DIY is correct (or at least safe and not destructive) before its unleashed on the wider public?

At least this might help encourage people to put the effort in to share knowledge and experiences, without leading to a torrent of abuse (likely from people who in fact have the intelligence and knowledge to be able to really help fellow enthusiasts)

Appreciate this would involve time and effort for those previewing the content, and they may not see any benefit in doing so as its unlikely to help them.. but, it's just a thought..

I think I know the threads your talking about.
A couple of Michael flares how to's received bad comments from a member on here that I think had a bit of an issue with him.
I wouldn't let that stop you from doing any guides mate.

Since this is a discussion forum, you can always receive positive or negative feedback.

Most DIY threads are for that purpose, is to encourage people to do their own stuff. I'm not a mechanic but the little I know I've share it here. And nobody is perfect, there is always another way to do something.

The only threads (in my opinion) that we need to moderate are DIY threads that can cause serious damage to your car or to the safety of the occupants.

I appreciate that you want to share with us your knowledge and I encourage you to do the the DIY threads, and as all the information or DIY on the internet, the author is not responsible for the use or the misuse of the content here. :)

Not a bad idea mate, will run it by rvm :nice:

appreciate that Gav :nice: , in hindsight though its probs not too easy to do logistically..

I guess its more about the feedback that people can give to a DIY to build on areas that may be lacking by the OP, and whether this feedback is constructive or attacking can be impacted by how the OP comes across (I mean some things like PPE are just a given) - but ideally it would be good to have quality DIY threads with feedback that improves them (IMO :) )
