Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with the Clio 197 F1 edition? Looking at a red one just now but am not sure it would be any good after the EK9 as they will probably be about the same pace?

Thoughts?

More tourque. heavier. handling just as good.

Thats the opinion of experiance not a Honda fanboy.

Great little car and standard brembos obviously bettter then 9 on breakes but just make sure its not shagged

If you put in an LSD it should come near the 9 in terms of handling I think :) Only thing is that a mate of mine who is into French cars, told me the engine doesn't really deliver the promised power. But obviously it will be torquier than an EK9 ;) This might be my choice if I had to choose a European hot hatch.

I've just bought a 197 Cup... (same thing in effect).

Awesome little car. Handles great, goes well and stops well. Very typically french but it's very stable and has awesome crash test results (not proven by me :D). If it's an F1 Team edition you'll have the Recaro's. Immense seat.

Look out for... Gearbox crunches as they are common for synchros. Also brake callipers seizing is common.

I've heard they are amazing car's especially for handling etc. I'm not personally a fan of french car's but the Cup/F1's should be amazing fun. :nice:

Not driven one yet but have been up against a few. They seem to be in need of more power. In my standard b18cr EG I was all over an F1 ed on track, it seemed planted and out braked me but down the straight I was disappointed to leave it behind.

I would love to get one and put some money into more power as im sure the chassis is capable.

been out in one once before at work (we do alot of business with the local renault dealer). more comfortable, good pace and handeling, alot more torquey and easy to live with.

as with most renaults dont expect it to be bombproof like our good old hondas! (engine lights, Bsi problems) but you cant compare a renault to a honda in terms of reliabilty.

speaking from experiance 5 years in the 2-8 years old 2nd hand motor trade.

Cool - I'm quite impressed by the praise so far to be honest as I thought it would get slated for not having a diff, how do they relate in pace to a stock '9? I was initially looking for a Focus RS, Megane R26 or DC5 if I was staying in a hatchback. Anyone tried any of those and want to throw them into the mix?

I don't fancy something slow but at the same time a car that's only a few years old might be nice for a while so I'd need to add weight unfortunately.

Car is pretty much a second car so other alternatives are more off the wall like E46 M3, S2000, VX220 etc but running costs are quite extreme on them.

When i had my first EK9, had a play with a Limonous Green one, it couldnt pull away though :)

DONT get a meganne r26. Those magane 2's are the most unreliable cars i've ever worked on when one goes out you can be sure it will be back within its warrenty period for window regulator modules, steering racks, clutch master cylinder, coms unit. Honestly mate They are so poorly made. I dont have a hatred for other makes or anything just that particualar chassis of megannes are realy bad. I have found renaults to be the worst of the french manufacturers. Just my opinion from working on that sort if age of cars.

Cool I'll take that on board mate. I've heard a few engines pop on the R26 as well?

What sort of issues are common to the 197 and what should I watch out for?

IMO, the 172/182 phase 2 cars were better. PH1 cars were a little faster, but the already rubbish interior was 3rd world in the PH1 cars. I've driven all 3 generations of RS clio's and had a 172 for about a year. I took quite a long test drive in the current shape (although not the F1 as it wasn't out back then) but as far as I am aware the engine is unchanged since the launch of the newer shape. It definietly felt down on power compared to the PH2 car, and although it handeled well I still prefered the older car.

Still, it's all subjective and the only problem really with the PH2 cars now is the age of them - although they can be had pretty cheaply now.

Also had a blast in a MK1 focus RS - Fast car, although somehow I was expecting a little more. DC5 I've driven quite a few times, again nice car which you could live with easily every day. I personally didn't go with any of those at the time...... went and bought an evo instead lol.

Dont buy French great cars for a spin or two not to own.
