Introduction,

So bit of background here.

Back in the day when I was 17,18,19 I owned various Civic's. Mostly EJ9's but I did have a B16 converted one at some point. I then moved onto drifting which took over my whole life and pretty much ruined it. Apart from the amazing fun of drifting itself that is. While I owned some of these incredibly impractical cars I had a second car (an Audi A4 at first which was terrible and disgusting). Because this car was terribly disgusting and suffered from every issue under then sun I decided it would be best to cut my losses and just get myself a civic. At the time I just wanted something cheap and standard as I did after all have skid cars which are fun enough on their own. I looked about for some EJ9's as they were cheap but couldn't find any that weren't rotten. I then found a VTI which was close by, had loads of miles but had been owned its whole life by an old woman (she probably wasn't that old when she bought it). Went to have a look and was impressed so bought it.

I then did a few bits and bobs to make it more fun like coileys, rear EK9 arb and some cheap taccy crap which looks like a gangstas teeth from behind. I then quit drifting as it had ruined me and I did a few more bits to the civic as it was my only car. EK9 brake setup, S80 gearbox and put the main seat out of my nissan in it.

I then recently bought another nissan to build up and skid (probably regret this soon) and I also bought a 330 BMW to drive round in ultra comfort like an old man. I put the civic up for sale for what I thought was a steal. Got loads of low offers and with the amount of fun it was I decided to keep hold of it and make it a track car.

SO!!!! These are the cars I've owned previously and a picture of how the Civic looked on the day I picked it up. Stay tuned.

Phase 1, modified on a budget and kept practical.

OK SO, I owned the car but it wasn't exactly my pride and joy. I wanted it to be as fun as possible but be kept as cheap as possible. I kinda hate it when you look back over a project and work out how much you've spent. Really winds me up and makes me feel ripped off. And with Honda's its EXTREMELY easy to do.

So I set about buying parts that would make a large difference for the money they'd cost.

I bought an S80 gearbox for it, some EK9 brakes all round with master cylinder, wheels, rear ARB, coileys, did a DIY EK9 headlight mod, bought a broken EK9 grill and repaired it so it look decent and a few other mods which I'm sure you will see.

I then came to sell the car for what I thought was a steal (only wanted £1800). I'd used the car on track once and it was amazing. despite being a full car used daily it had been quicker than nearly everything on track. Admittedly I've had my fair share of hard driving over the years but I was still amazed at how well it did.

The following pictures are from the for sale advert along with the spec list.

dot 5.1 brake fluid

Wheels & Tyres Enkei RP01 15x7
Nankang NS2-r tyres all round (fronts could do with being replaced)

Phase 2, make it as fast a possible as cheaply as possible and fit a cage.

Ok, so the car didn't sell. This kinda made me happy. I know it means owning 3 cars but and I am supposed to be saving up to move out but what the hell. Its cheap and its great fun.

So what mods do you do if you want it cheap and fast? Well for one everything that's in the car that isn't necessary can be ripped out. Obviously interior panels go but so do other things like sun roof, windows along with mechanism and door metal, any extra bits of metal that aren't doing anything, air con, ABS you name it. Its actually amazing just how much can come out. Its also amazing just how much fun it is to remove and just what difference it makes to the car. I've removed about 200KG's from this and then added in a 40KG cage. The car is ever so slightly slower than my mates 98 spec teg which is currently stock bar an exhaust and intake. It really is amazing because most of the stuff costs nothing. The windows cost me £210 for the 4 sides (which really isn't good value for money as they don't save an awful lot) and the sunroof I did myself so cost about £20. Bar that I think its pretty much cost free.

I also decided that along with making it lighter I'd try make the chassis setup better. So bought adjustable camber and toe arms and also some absolutely whopping 225/50/15 R888's. Now if you've ever seen pictures of the Kanjo cars in japan with their massive balloon looking tyres the reason is because they run 225/50/15's. The way I see it is you can spend a hell of a lot of money on handling with braces, arms, bushes etc but its will cost you another £100 to get tyres that are 30mm wider and will add a lot more grip. Its just easy really. I did however have a lovely time trying to make them fit. They are a LOT wider and taller than 195/50's and therefore I had to butcher the arches all round to make them fit. The rear arches were rotten anyway so I kind of had the attitude that they really couldn't get any worse so just set about battering them with an arch roller till the tyres fitted. They look horrific but the tyres fit and it grips like nothing you've been in.

Also fitted a cage to save my life when I stack it big into something. And fitted a pair of seats I had lying around from nissan days.

Day one, interior strip.

DIY perspex sunroof bung.

Cage fitting (all sound deadening removed at same time)

Seats back in. (note that doors have been cut)

New wheels before fitting (car sat on EK9 wheels)

Test fit

Rears fitted (hench)

Finished article,

Amazing just how much tidier the engine bay looks with the ABS and air con removed.

Removable pins for the drivers window. This is so I can run a window net when it gets hot.

I've also put the fog lamp surrounds in I had lying about. I've bought some brake duct hosing to run bake cooling on the front of the car. I recon this will cost me about £40 all in. Another good cheap mod well worth doing on a track car.

How do the fronts fit? I'm wanting atleast 225 width on the front of mine eventually.

Id say some arch work by the looks of it, where did you get the cage from? I just bought the same wheels the other day rp01's

how do they fit??? look at the state of the front arches ahahah. I bought a front camber kit and maxed it to 3 1/2 degrees camber. then rolled the arches with an arch roller **** loads and they just about fit. oh and i needed to belt my inner arches loads with a mallet. i really need to fit some 225/45's once these are finished.

the cage was from here i think. second hand. was like £500 delivered. can't complain.

oh and i was going to ask you (rossco) how did you fit your drivers window net? i have one.

Iv been asked that before il send you a pic of how mine is fitted

Is that on a 7j wheel? Sorry for all the questions just I've got 7j and want wider wheels, just not sure how 225s look on a 7j. Probably abit too much?

Well my 205 FZ201 tyres stated the 'ideal' size as 6.5j.

I suspect 225 are fine on 7j.

Thanks rossco

Yes the wheels are a 7j. They fit fine IMO. I will be going for 225/45's next time as I'm having trouble with them touching the top of the inner arches.

decided last night to make some tyre stencils.

it went alright i guess.

i couldn't find the exact stencils online anywhere to print out big enough so i just went on microsoft word and played with different fonts until i was happy. printed out various sizes and took them up the garage.

basically i used a bit of card for the stencil, drew the inside of the tyre (outside of wheel rim) and outside of tyre, cut out the letters i'd printed and layed them in the right location, used the paper i'd cut the letters out of the draw the letters on the card then cut them out with a knife. it took a while but works ok. plus i can re use the stencils now on every set of tyres i get. i may well move the 'TOYO and TIRES' words closer together.

i used white plastic primer for them. lets see how well it lasts. i recon the paint could have been better so i need to find out how other people are doing it.

anyway lets see the pics.

results??????

i definitely need to get my window net in, clean my rub strip recces' properly and get a number square sticker on each side. may as well have the most kanjo look i can.

wanting to sell my old black interior off as its no longer needed.

anyone help me on pricing?

things like black carpet, full black door cards, interior plastics etc would be helpful.

Not updated this in a while.

Did a load of track days last year and it was a dream. The car needed a bit of work over winter to tidy things up and slightly improve things.

SO,

We fitted a full ITR front subframe and rack. The rack was de power steering'd at the same time. Also all the front end recieved polybushes. Also brand new track rods and ends.
Fitted a fidanza light flywheel with new clutch.
Used stickerflex on all the engine and torque mounts to hold the engine steady.
Got rid of the rust underneith and undersealed.
Cut out the rust from the back arches and painted both quarters (in a really pikey way using porn mags for masking and cheap paint. Looks reasonable and will do.
Fitted 225/45/15 R888's instead of 50 profile.
Fitted yellowstuff front pads.
Took all interiour out, cleaned up, painted the whole inside with silver hammerite and also tidied up the wiring loom.
Fitted my Nardi steering wheel.
Fitted a new front wing.
Unsiezed the coileys and gave them a little pre load.
Trimmed off excess metal behind the rear bumper and cut slots in the rear bumper for anti drag. (looks pikey but will do)
Make pikey BMC stopper.
Fitted better rear LCA's, sanded and polished the gold ASR brace so its nice and shiney silver.

I think thats it but may have missed something.

Pics.

Loving this dude, makes me miss my civic haha. Whens the next outing?

Next outing is Donnington on 18 April. Me and my mate who own this aim to do 1 track day each month probably swapping between Donny and Oulton with maybe 1 at Cadwel. However the car gets driven to each track day so you can imagine the nightmare of driving for 3 hours withe all the noise, no sterio, no nothing in a bucket seat isn't all that pleasurable.

Cheers Matty, love yours too. Its just like ours but with good money spent and not built by a total pikey ahahah.

I will get some better pics of this with a good camera as i feel i'm not doing it any justice with my phone.

Well,

Took it Donnington. Totally owned it. Was brilliant fun.

Right up until about half 11 in the morning. I've said it's been coming for a long time to my mate. Engine keeps drinking oil and we abuse it like ****.

Never thought number 3 would melt though!!! On a STOCK motor! I can only imagine an injector failed and we leaned out as all the others looked fine.

Oh well, time to spend ages faffing about getting the new engine in. Ball ache................

Even gave it a wash and new brakes before the day. Hating life right now.

This cheered me up though. Brand new M3 on the track day with us. It was running 295/30/18 Dunlop snazzy track tires. Looked ace.
