What happens when you drop a valve on the Norschliefe

No where near as spectacular as Ian's but here's mine.

Melted piston 3

Melted piston stuck to cylinder wall, also looks like the piston has expanded abit too much from constant high rpm/boost in 5th and scraped the walls.

Valve failure can be quiet often traced back to worn valve guides, are yee lads checking guides before build? Most heads I've seen recently need all new guides

Hope you weren't running Skunk2 or Supertech valves?

OEM valves with supertech valve train.

Damn Ian, that's some damage man.... those retainers have completely failed on you.

I think i might have a broken a spring but with the amount of damage its hard to tell after.

Is the spring in two ?? It looks like the retainer to me.

I have found what looks like broken inner springs....

What a mess, at least you made the right decision in buying the m3.

I hope so, but i need to get the conrod bearings done on that for track.

Yikes! glad i didn't crash on your oil! :p

Everything was replaced in that engine especially the seals and guides.

Haha yeah in lucky, I checked the dipstick afterwards and it didn't lose much at all.
New theory is a failed injector, will know for sure once I've had them tested.

ijwhiteman, sorry to see and read this...

So what are your plans now?

Why would that cause it? No fuel for cooling?

Yeah lean mixture if it's not working fully. Will see in time.
Only one cylinder is like that so can't just be the heat/pressure of the turbo setup, you'd expect the other cylinders to look similar.

detonation? faulty injector?

No signs of Det on the pistons/plugs. This is what I immediately thought, I used the local 98 octane fuel and thought it had started to Det, but there are no signs of that anywhere. Clearly something caused it to get hot, you can see the marks on the cylinder walls from the expansion. No doubt he piston skirts will be scored up aswell once I get them out.
Obviously I'd like to get to the bottom of what happened so it doesn't happen to the next engine that goes in.

Move on :nerv:

I have bought a BMW M3.....

Surprised your not using the 102 octane....

Yeah I was told to keep strictly to the v power fuels and that some other brands have been known to have some iffy batches of super.
Car only did 31 miles on the local 98 octane so that was my thoughts at first.

But atleast with a 102 your covering any inconsitancy. The reason to stay with Shell is it's more constantly 99. That's what you require.

If you run 102 then your covering any discrepancy of poor manufacture.

98 isn't a good idea I could be 96 or 97

Ouch! Another tuned Honda lump bites the dust.

I had issues with an engine from that tuner too, total lemon, think I got about 2 months of road driving out of it before it went pop.

always amazing to see how the piston and head can get such destruction without snapping a rod.....
