What happens when you drop a valve on the Norschliefe

It took me 4 laps to murder my healthy B16B.

My (1989!!) b16a1 has taken death now for 2 rounds with no issue at all, and i'm 99% sure its making the same power more or less. (heavy skim, gasflow + b16b cams).

I'm even running the b16b ecu.

Turbocharged at the ring I presume? What was the failure you had with the b16b?

No mine was bone stock. Rod through block at Snetterton. Assumed oil starvation!
Nothing is *that* relaible if you rev it hard past 8k I guess!

Yeah, was always a strong engine but I suppose I was asking abit too much to use it as a turbocharged track engine.
Lasted just over 1k miles boosted with 45mins at Bedford autodrome and 4laps of the ring.
Both on low boost 0.4 bar. Will see what actually killed it on the weekend.

Forged pistons are on the cards if the block is ok. I'm not looking for anymore power either. This car is wayyyy too good on track to go back to N/A! If I'm honest I doubt I'll have another N/A honda again, unless k20 dc2....

You were doing a fifth gear pull with stock pistons lol, I'm not surprised you cracked a ringland. It should be quite a straight forward fix to be honest. Personally, as you're not after more power, a NPR (or other aftermarket)set of B16B pistons will be fine. All you'll need to do is go to 81.5mm :) .

Damn Ian, that's some damage man.... those retainers have completely failed on you.

I think a spring failed but surely this should not happen on a 8600 limit??

That's nothing, I've had it at 130mph in 5th, full throttle up hill for a good 20secs and up at 140mph on other sections of the track.
Take it NPR are stronger than stock pistons? If they've gone on low boost I want it reliable for the higher boost settings.

Personally i wouldn't bother! I went all out got the best stuff, a reputable builder and look where that landed me! May as well done it myself in my garden!

I will do it myself, probably in the garage though lol

Lol. They are stronger than stock but not by a tremendous amount. They'll be fine for your power range. The thing with forged pistons is that you'll have to go down the custom route if you want to keep it a b16b.

What a mess, at least you made the right decision in buying the m3.

As for the valve springs/retainers I would not expect them to break at an 8600 limit, I would suggest they were not fitted right or faulty components.

I had a h22 that had a rev limit of 9800 using stock valves and retainers and skunk2 springs, and would still be going strong had I not removed it to do a K swap!!
