Trondelond's EK4

nice mate. good to see you tackling the problems and solving them rather than bodging them.
i think the car would benefit from some oem facelift rear lights too...just my opinion though of course.

I guess other people's bodging is what put me in this situation! :D I do agree on the rear lights, but at the moment I'm focusing on mechanical and MOT issues. I'll do the tarting up later! :)
By the way - are the pre- and post facelift headlights/taillights the same fitment? I have to order headlights and I'm a little unsure here.

To answer my own question; rear taillights fit both models, headlights don't.

eBay ftw, as I'm going from 4x100 to 5x114, I have no wheels for the car anymore. Ordered some dc2 15" on ebay, at least I can reuse the winter rubber on these.

...which leaves me plenty of time to find the perfect summer wheels. :D

It´s picmania! Three clean items in the engine bay now at least, new OE engine mounts :

Changed the VTEC solenoid gasket, this was leaking quite a bit, but that´s to be expected :

Slapped on new OE boots on both sides and a new rod, as I sawed the old one into bits :

I messed up my parts order, and ended up with two flywheel bearings instead of one flywheel bearing and one release bearing. The old release bearing will have to do, gave it and the shifter fork a clean, lubed it all up and it should be ready for a few more miles :

Gearbox finally installed!

8048337280_44e2f2107b_z.jpg

I´m betting this should be a much more fun and better suited item than the old one..

A buddy moved into our garage last night, so I got a bit distracted from the car. Anyway, finally got the powerflex bushes for the arb ends, and used most of the time to get the little buggers into place. Also, the bolts on the Blox droplinks seemed a bit short for this setup, I have no idea why. Managed to squeeze them in at least.

8054865391_98728ca06f_z.jpg

Also did some tidying on the wiring that had been cut or ripped off, and moved some bits from my old gearbox to the new. I think it's engine installation time soon.

New bushings pressed into the Blox LCA's. Let's see if they last longer than their reputation gives them credit for if they're installed to spec.

Got the wiring back onto the engine, routed a little more sensibly than it was when it came off. Less chance of stuff being ripped off now at least.

The wheels have been catching everywhere on the inner arches, front and rear. Got the rust off with powertools :

8072045013_2514390e17_z.jpg

And started priming the problem areas. I only had primer that I used on my green Del Sol lying about, at least there's no doubt where I've sprayed..

My 5-lug conversion has landed. :)
Popped by my local honda dealer and got some MTF and oilfilters while I was driving to the garage with the little pallet.

I have like 6 sets of 4x100 wheels lying about, a lot of good it does me now.. so I got some DC2 wheels off eBay for winter use.

8078101668_652c8698fb.jpg

And finally, as the previous user has used way to powerful lightbulbs in the headlighs, the reflector on one light had melted. Got some replacements in yesterday.

Off to work; started with measuring the lowering of the coilovers to see if they were in accordance with the TUV papers for MOT purpouses, and hey - they were! At least I don't have to dig all the dirt out of the threads to adjust them now. But - they were put together with the bare minimum of parts; no bump stops and no dust caps on them either. So I ripped the rear ones apart and gave the top hats a new set of spring mounts.

8079315803_97f6546b89.jpg

Had some old dust caps lying about, so I modified these to fit; and installed some bumpstops as well.

Then it was time to test-fit the rear bits for the 5-lug conversion, slapped on some new rear toe-arms first :

And everything seemed to pop nicely into place :

Had to remove the caliper and ABS sensor as the wiring for this was cut. And my EK sensors don't fit. :/ Must get new or used ones. At least some that fit and work.

Got a little bit done this weekend.. new alternator belt and OE plugs installed, and I went over the rear brakes as I didn't know the condition of them. A couple of slider pins were seized, but a light sanding and some new grease cured that. Fortunately the pistons were moving smoothly.

8083533932_a5ee06f378_z.jpg

My problem with the ABS sensors turned out to be a miss. When I got the car, I was told the rear ABS sensors were shot, and I got some replacement items with the car. Turns out that it was the replacements that were wrong, the EK4 ABS sensors bolt up just fine to the DC2 bits. Only difference is how the wiring is laid out along the RTA. Whoo.
Too bad I did a transplant on one of the DC2 sensors, using the EK4 wiring and DC2 sensor before I noticed this. Hopefully it'll work somehow.

Everything in the back is bolted up, and I will re-torque everything when I get some weight on the suspension.

8083540182_aae052949e_z.jpg

Not really hellaflush, but it'll work for winter. I've got plenty of time to figure out what blingin' wheels I'll be running for summer. :D

8083547741_19f35340bd_z.jpg

Had an old steering rack bush kit from Energy suspension lying about, so I figured I'd just as well put that on while I was at it :

8087435865_607a9dbb1d.jpg

Got to work on the front dampers, picked them apart and modified some dust boots to fit, along with bump stops.

8087436907_55f69717ac_z.jpg

And finally, I got the engine back in. And the new engine mounts made a massive difference compared to the old ones!

Love the progress. Cant believe the shortcuts the previous owners took!

Thank you, gents. It´s given me a few laughs, and I´ve also been wondering how I´ve survived.. :D

Managed to buy a used Mugen 4-1 manifold, twinloop exhaust and a high flow cat today as well, so I think most of the parts I need are present or at least underway. Yay. Hopefully we´ll get this baby on the road soon!

Seems like everything including the abs sensors bolt up nicely in the front as well, moved some bracketry from the old parts and hey :

8101142768_4e178ed27b_z.jpg

Next up - installing on the other side, and torqueing it all up.

Well, damnit. The water temperature sensor seemed pretty beat up, and the wire for the plug just.. well.. fell off. Then the sensor decided to snap while I was installing it. Hopefully it'll seal the head tightly. I've just purchased a little sensor adapter so I can install the temp sensor in a radiator hose. Not ideal, but it beats drilling the bugger out at the moment.

Torqued up all the suspension bits, and painted a little where the primer was :

8110127050_d8e04c3f63_z.jpg

And installed the GruppeM / OEM hybrid intake system along with most of the other bits you have to install when reinstalling the engine :

8110124590_1253b455b2_z.jpg

Slapped some gunk in the wheel arches, to cover up where I've sanded and primed.

8117270015_f719e46250_z.jpg

Got my DC2 wheels back with rubber for winter :

8117367729_ccaca2af89_z.jpg

And finally my TwinLoop arrived, yay! I was worried for a second that it could be a replica, but fortunately it's the real deal. Looking forward to hearing what this badboy can do.

8117284246_0a36b91974_z.jpg

Started installing it as well :

8117274051_b4e57f770b_z.jpg

I was going to fit the Mugen header, but somehow I've managed to wiretuck the lambda sensor plug, I can't find the damn thing. So I'll have to a bit more searching before the header goes on. At least I hooked up the gear linkage and put on a new oil filter while I was underneath.

8117274051_b4e57f770b_z.jpg

And as I managed to snap both the wire and the temp sensor itself, I got an adapter to fit to the upper radiator hose. Got a cheap universal temp sensor to fit there as well, just for the hell of it. I'm guessing the voltages will be different from the OE sensor, but no harm in trying. If it doesn't work, I'll make it work with the spare OE sensor I have.

8117389854_35f5a2ebdc_z.jpg

So there.

Thanks, my main motivation is that the alternator on my Sunny GTi-R has called it quits, so I need to get this car on the road again so I can roll the Sunny in and start working on that through the winter. So there'll be more updates, don't you worry! :D

With the wiring schematics in hand, I found the plug for the o2 sensor - nowhere near where it was supposed to be. But at least it enabled me to get the header on now. Whoo. Looking forward to hearing this stuff. Bolted on the last bits in the engine bay as well.

8120354321_36a2b54c9a_z.jpg

I had some Ultra Racing fender braces kicking about, and I figured I couldn´t be bothered installing them, as I would have to fiddle around with drilling holes and whatnot everywhere. But a buddy is renting some space in our garage while he is turbocharging his civic, and I got an idea :

8120367488_d48873bb01_z.jpg

And I got to adjust the doors as well, which was LONG overdue!
