The worst has happened, was headin towards the motorway when my timing belt snapped, wasn't driving fast, moved off from a set of traffic lights changed gear at 4k rpm in to 2nd then shortly after POP revs went to 0 and car wouldn't start :( Got my local mechnic to come tow me to his unit and we opened her up to have a look, and the belt was shredded.

I'm now looking to get the car back on the road and need help picking certain parts, i was told that i'll need...

  • set of valves
  • set of valve springs
  • high perf timing belt
  • nigh pres head gasket

is there anything else i'm missing?

Additional mods i thought i'd do while engine was open is

  • cams
  • flywheel
  • clutch

Has anyone had to deal with this problem. Any help would be appreciated :)

Sorry to hear this mate :( one of the worst things that can happen. It could be worse though sometimes a snapped timing belt = new engine!

Good luck with that! :)

you dont always need new valves, your springs should be fine, what usually happens is the valves hit the pistons, but that dosent always damage something, i had 8 valves hit my piston, only 4 bent. anyways if you do replace valves to a 3 angle valve job too.

sorry to here bud well sucks when things like that happen. like u say get a set of stage 1 or 2 cams and v/springs to match new timming belt u will be on the road in no time with a bit more bhp.

Thanks ppl, i'm gonna get me mechanic to open it up on monday so that way atleast i'll have a rough idea what i'll need replacing.

Will post what needs what on monday hopefully with some photos too.

Does anyone recommend any cams? Was considering Skunk2 cams and Skunk2 v/springs?

Depends on your price range.

A good one to do would be to just slap a B16b head on there, but it may be quite hard to get a complete B16b head.

Skunk2 valvetrain stuff is good though.

I've been looking for just the head already but can't find a b16b one, ppl want to sell the whole b16b engine. I did manage to find a B18 UK6 '99 Teg head not too sure if that will work by simply puting it together and running with my ecu!?! The seller did say it would be wouldn't want to believe what he wants to say.

Would anyone think that if i just changed the head to a b18 it would be quicker then a b16b? Or if i change the valvetrain and cams in my b16b it would be quicker?

Would like to put a budget of about £1500-£2000.

Think the 98 spec Teggy is the same as the 9, but don't quote me on that.

For £2000 and less, you should be able to get some really good head modifications done and have some change left over.

But think before you act.

It it really worth upgrading loads of internal head stuff to stage 2 / 3 if you don't have anything to back it up, such as inlet manifold, larger injectors maybe, other exhaust mods (sorry, don't know what current modification you have).

yes the b18c head is the same as the b16b they all fit each other and work well. the only time u need to change the ecu is when u change the stroke or displacement. of course you will get much more out of it with an after market ecu and re map or what ever u decide to do std ecu will run it

Your cams will be fine but at worst have slight scoring.
You need to get the head off to check the condition of your pistons and cyl-head. Youll find if you did have piston to valve contact, factory valves bend wheras aftermarket snap (what with the thinner valve neck where the head meets the stem as they flow more). You need to inspect the lash-adjusters and check none are bent or worst the cast part of the rocker snapped off.

For flywheel and clutch youll need to drop the box.

Factory parts and prices..
Type-R spring and valve set - £110 (14711-P73-J01)
Fulll head gasket set inc new orings £100 (06110-P73-030)
Timing belt kit & new tensioner £50 (14400-P72-014)

stick with factory timing belt head gasket set. Factory works, period.

If you want different cams also then you'll need fuel-management. If you are going to do that then Ill give you a hand with some good prices.

Thanks EK9Turbo!!

My mechanic was supposed to open the head today but was short staffed so he's defo gonna open it tmr! hopefully find out whats damaged!! Fingers crossed!

Right heads off the car and found out the it didn't snap off some part of my engine jammed it.

part of the engine mount broke off and probs got stuck where the cambelt is. I will post some pictures up later. The head and pistons are fine, but i've bent 4-8 valves.

Ain't got a clue wat next step is, just stressed out. Mate tells me put a b20 bottom block and use my the b16b head?? pissed off!!

i woudl replace all teh valves as you dont know what ones have been stressed or not just to be on teh safe side, bistons and bore ok then i take it,, no need to change the bottom end if so,, , dont think teh B20 bottom end has sufficient releifs in teh pistons to clear the valves when running on type R cams

thanks olly,

i've sourced out a b20 engine, got a mate that will pollish it all out for me, still it will need a few mods, like external oil feed etc. Has anyone done a b20 bottom with b16b head?

we were gonna stick one in a DC2 got all teh oil feed conversion parts form teh us etc,, think its documented as a frankeinstein conversion,, type frankeinstein honda into google for info,,

we are putting a K20a in teh dc2 instead now,, justin sold teh frankeinstein block to julian at rare rims in teh end,, was a while back though,,

Them links are sik!! lol bare info!

My mate showed me a b20 bottom with b16 head and it works fine... infact it's kinda stupidly fast esp in 3rd and 4th
gear! The engine was in a EJ tho not a EK.

I'm still going to keep my options open!

Here are the photos i've taken of my pistons

If u can see where the engine mount goes you will see a chuck missing which ripped my belt apart!!
