hey guys was out the other night doing just over 70 on motorway when i heard a pop and then loads and loads of smoke came out exhaust turned car off asap pulled over had look in engine had oil between min max so checked timing belt was ok then started car and lots of smoke just idiling blue/white managed to drive it home with it sounding like a subaru lol got home all back of car was covered in oil and carbon and has a wee slight knock what yous recon then

my thoughts pistonrings and stem seals

any help would be amazing

I think you will have to get the head off, but sounds turminal to me. Is it modded at all. I know if you use Skunk 2 cams with oem valves the valve heads fall off:shocked:.

:secret:I have a b16b for sale:D:secret:

Dunx

its is b18c4 with itr head itr cams with uprated valve springs and retainers and ek9pistons headgasket was done not that long ago with head skim due to it overheating ad it has been running mint but is has been lil bit smokey just after it overheated

What ECU are you using? since you;ll have run it really lean on a stock one!

 Not when theyre properly dialed/clearenced

that would be in the region of 12-1 or higher c/r with a skimed itr head unless the ek9 pistons have been machined in some way?....

sounds like a valve tho, maybe just half a valve broken off/cracked/chipped

i've had it happen to me before,

time to take the head off

sounds like its gasket or valve related, only way to work it out is compression test it and start stripping it down

Sounds like you lost a cylinder, you need to do a compression check, the results will probably be horrible, after that take the head off and inspect everything.

well its running a p28 on chrome management and the car has been runnin mint av got thoughts of valve seals and piston rings i have valve seals in the house but i am kinda shi**n my selft about the pistonrings going to strip it on sat morning

As others have said, Compression test it. And if you do end up stripping it down then post pics of your pistons please

this could be your result.........just to prepair you for possibly the worst...

good luck with it,

there was a big debate about valve heads falling off with skunk2 cams+springs,

people saying the heads fall off etc DUE to the stronger springs,

i cant get my head around this, how can it happen?

its like they were saying with the stronger springs they will close the valve with to much force....... what the hell are they talking about?

the only way i could see it happening is due to lack of piston to valve clearance as you said.

The uncompressed height of valve-springs, seats and retainers would play a part in the forces between the valve head and the seat, but skunk2 have come a long way in the last couple years. The inner springs fitment in the outer doesnt seem as good as say supertech for example but theyre good quality.

Plus you dont see their cams snapping all te time now so theyre probly using better billets. Most of the big name stuff tats for sale is manufactured in china to keep production costs down and initial profit high for the distributors.

supertech>skunk2 any day of the week!! And the skunk2 cams do break but so do all cam manufacturers i have seen toda, crane, crower, skunk2 all break. It could be manufacture defect or it could be poor handling. Also the skunk2 cams like nearly all cams are cast not billet, you can reliably only run billet cams with roller rockers  either way i ham happy keeping my oem cams and valvetrain :nice:

Why do you say about billett cam + roller rockers? Ive never had a problem with IB/BP billets, and yes supertech are very nice quality.

That was my understanding, though i learned that when i first started playing with cars about 9 years ago, perhaps better materials have changed that but in the past billet cams could not really handle the pressure of a flat tapped rocker, the cam lobes would wear down.
