Oil pressure dropped!

How much do pumps cost?
...$120-$175 USD

If my pump had gone I would have no pressure right?
...correct, gone=no pump=no pressure or oil.

I read somewhere that they don't gradually go they just go!!!
...some do, some don't.

If it is your oil pump that is starting to fail, the heart of the engine, replace it with a vtec oil pump.
Why didn't you fit one to the engine when you were working on it? One would think if your going for a b20 vtec, its going to rev higher than the b20 oil pump is manufactured and designed for, its easy when the engine is out of the bay, and they are not extremely expensive at all.

Anywho--hope you get it sorted out. :nice:

I do agree with what you have said. I should have changed it. Although I have heard of a fair few b20s running non vtec pumps. Both oil and water. I only didn't as I don't rev past 7.4 the same as a crv.
But if I had changed it then that would be one more thing eliminated from the process of finding the fault.

If your oil pressure has droped really quick then maybe its bearing related issue. At the end of the day its your bearing clearences that create oil pressure not the pump its self. Ime not saying that its not your pump but you should of really check the clearences/wear of the bearings before putting it together. I know this because ive done it in the past :angry2: (but dont tell no one :p). But technically, if the b20 bottom end was in good nick before then you should be ok unless you have some crap floating around the engine from the build thats damaged them.

I got the b20 from a crv my m8 owned. The engine was fine and only did 75k.
I'm gonna check for crap in the system when I do the oil change and go from there really.
As for revving past 7.4k I barely go to that, that's where my shift light comes on. My vtec comes in at 5k and most say that b20s don't make much power over the high 7s. My limit is 8k but I don't go to that to be safe till it's all tuned and sorted. Which it was booked in for but now will have to be cancelled. Grrrr

..well in that case...must be another issue outside of the oil pump...could your oil pressure sensor be damaged? start there maybe for elimination?

btw, do you like the b20 vtec? one of my dream motors...

Ok I'll check that too. Also gonna try a different gauge.
As for liking the b20.... I moved up from a 1.4 lol
but my friend had a vti and I was blown away by the sheer agressive acceleration. But the b20vtec has more agression at crossover plus power all across the revs. Just pulls from nothing.

lucky bastard,
...now get your dam oil pressure fixed! :)

Lol tama, you should build one if you like them so much. My mate had a b20 EF and that was a rocket.....

gauge will be the 1st thing i check if i were u especially the 1 u got.

I am getting old I guess, because I have gone from a turbo fan to a torque fan, and is the reason for me being a fan of the b20 VTEC frank creations.

I would rather get a K24 over the B20 VTEC...not that there is anything wrong with the B20...

last time i have the issue of low oil pressure.
conrod bearing burn.
lubrication use 10/40. - low oil pressure
change to 20/50 - oil pressure ok.
suspected semi sintetic 10/40 not original one.

I am using 10w40 now and was thinking of swapping to 5w30. But you say go the other way? If it's too thick won't it just block the pick up?

I would also prefer a k series but money is a problem. Where as I got my b20 for freeeeeeeee!

20/50 if pressure is low and hope you don't damage anything.
your better off with locating the sudden cause of the pressure drop and fix it.

FREE??? dam man, you really are a lucky bastard!

FREE??? dam man, you really are a lucky bastard!
just the block, everything else i bought.
so if i sort the problem what oil should i use/ stick with 10w40 and hamp b18c filter?

I would stick with 10/40 if that was being used prior and get the pressure issue resolved asap. It may only be a simple pressure gauge issue...it may be something else, but I would track it down rather than just changing the oil specifications. In my mind by only changing the oil spec, your just putting off the issue, its a band-aid in other words.

Just me tho...[i bet its your gauge ;)]

Yep like tama said it could be simple or it could be a pain. Always start with the simple things first. Do not just stick just stick thicker oil in hoping it will just go away and solve the problem (unless you want to just sell the car ! :p:p:p:p only joking)

No, I would try and band aid it. Was just asking what oil I should be running. And I don't supose there's a way of checking my gauge without putting another one in?
Thanx for all you help guys.

also where about in brum are you rich777 i am also in brum.

I live in streetly mate, where you from ? Also mate i'd go with the oil pressure sender first not the gauge as all the gauge is doing is reading a 0-5 volt signal from the sender. Have you got one of those sandwich plates with a sender screwed into it ? If so ive just had to replace the sender on mine as it was reading 7 bar lol.

I'm in erdington m8. I'm using the sandwich plate for my vtec kit. I have a spliter coming from my pressure switch.
You go to many of the midlands meets? They advetise them on civiclife. Think there's one on 28th.
