Exactly how much oil?

hard to know

you will deffo burn that out if your spending the day drag racing

but over filling your oil is bad for the engine

also running the car with more oil than necessary stains the oil black within a few days

and will continue to stain your next change of oil

Acutally, where you say about the oil staining.... I've noticed my the oil is no longer purple in colour (Royal Purple Motor Oil)
Its now clear/light tan colour (clean)
...

i have Motul Chrono 300v 5w-40 and Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 in large amounts right now and majority of people buying have been of the type R generation. both cracking oils! they buy 2 x 2litre motuls and the silkolene is a 5 litre tub...

so id agree with the info people have put up, never more than 4 litre in the engine as no one yet has bought 3x motuls. when i had my ek9 aswell, i always had 1 litre spare in the silkolene tub, it was great to have as a top up between changes :)

I've used around 4.2L coz according to my dipstick 4 Lt was below the 2nd dot. Any bad effects if used more oil than needed? Also its best to drain your oil HOT. Give it about 30 min before you install a new oil filter & top off w/ 10W40 fully synthetic oil. :)

I use an accurate measuring jug, put pretty much what you need in, and then start the engine, get the oil up to temp, turn off and let settle for a few mins and check the dipstick. Then just slowly add more oil to bring up to the correct level. If you put too much in as someone mentioned above. I think the best way would be to let the oil go cold, and then slowly take the drain plug out and drain some out into a clean jug. You may make a bit of a mess, but you will have fresh oil in the jug, and if you do accidently take too much out, just add it again. Best way Ive found to do my changes and get the correct amount of oil in the car. If you do this, you will know that you have the right amount of oil in for 'your' car.

If you change the oil after taking the car out and getting it up to temp then you will get the most possible out

I do this then just slam a 4L container of oil in, usually brings it up to a couple of mm over max which is spot on

It is advisable to run your car a few mm over max, doesn't do the engine any harm and if you're on track etc the extra oil is a good idea

A mate of mine used to do loads of track days in his DC2 and Mardis gras who were racing a DC2 at the time gave him loads of advice on setup etc and advised to run a few mm over, especially beneficial if you're not running a baffled sump of some sort

i know i'm going to sound like a noob...but what if you have a b20 block? does it take more oil???

You would have to check the manual for the amount of oil that engine uses.

I wouldnt try draining oil when its hot for two reasons (both of which I found out for myself) 1, Its too damn hot and when your trying to get the plug in you get burnt. 2, the oils a lot thinner which means it flows a lot faster and comes out too quick. This is why I keep adding it, as its a lot easier to keep adding then having to take it out afterwards. What I do is add pretty much what the manual states, then start the engine, warm it up and let it settle and check level, then add from there.

Mine EK9 is 4.2L

Reason?
I have the front end of my car jacked up and let all the oil drain overnight.

I didnt know K20a was 4.7L, I was wondering why I had to put more oil the next day on my DC5R.
