Been trying to start the car this weekend and having no joy.
Can hear the starter solenoid clicking but starter itself isnt doing anything.
I have power and lights etc

This is how I have my battery relocation set up
I did accidentally chop off the wire that goes from loom to fuse box for the alternator but thats back on now (oops)

I've checked all my earths, and I was missing the gearbox one. I thought I'd found it but it's a little thin, so possibly for something else, could this be having an effect that its smaller?

Not yet checked the starter itself, but I'm doubtful this is my issue.. It was completely fine when it came off..

Battery isn't the issue, its basically new and works perfect on my saxo.

I think I've covered everything, and its probably going to be down to wiring somehow, but it seems okay so I'm at a bit off a loss atm :(

Try whacking a jump lead between the battery -and the gearbox

Have you had a voltmeter out to check power supplies and earths?

You need very good clean connections for a starter to review your relocation kit with that in mind.

I had a problem with my earths recently. I know you have just had your bay painted and that may cause it not to get a good earth. I had to scrape away the paint at the earths so it got a clean connection and it seems to have sorted the problem

Is the earth from your starter good

As mentioned you need the lug for the earths to be touching fresh bare metal on the chasis for them to conduct properly, had a small earth issue on my car and I hadn't prepared the earth point properly

Just been out to check continuity. Used a jump lead from gearbox to chassis to make sure its not just the thin earth thats the problem..

got NO continuity between chassis and gearbox/engine?
starter to battery is good, as is alternator to battery.

didnt check voltages but yeh. seems odd.

Also, can someone confirm all the earthing points?
My car never had the rocker to chassis one that I see sometimes, but it was always fine before? :/

Rocker cover to chassis, gearbox to chassis, battery to chassis and one near thermostat housing to chassis.

I'm sure that's them all :)

guessing the thermostat one is the one in with the loom?
never had an issue before without the rocker one

Remember the rocker cover earth is from from the head stud not the rocker cover it self as you got a rubber gasket in the way.
Make sure you got back to bare metal on all earth points and paint over any exposed metal bits or simply apply the electronics grease on top.

Yeah. The valve cover one is important. A jordan I rebuild years ago refused to crank without it! Guess it probably comes down to if you already have sufficient points else where.

do I need to make a new earth from the rocker then? its literally never had one in the time i've owned it - do people relocate them as I've seen lots of cars without it?

Rocker cover is not isolated from the head, if you look at OEM cover all bolt holes are left unpainted and so is the little tab where the earth goes at the front of the cover. People often ignore this when re-spraying covers...

for neatness, if i find somewhere else on the head that isnt the rocker - can i run earth from head to gearbox, then stack connections to then go gearbox to chassis.
I'm so confused where the rocker cover one was if its a necessity

No, avoid stacking them.

Gearbox is already earthed to the head, via the block, it's all bolted together.

Earth the head to the strut top (spare bolt hole on back of head) and earth gearbox to chassis leg, and a nice neat one from the cam cover stud.

Job done

It should be isolated as each hole has a rubber washer to stop metal to metal contact and provide a oil seal

That don't mean nothing as their is a massive rubber gasket in the way lol

The tab your referring to is not for the earth.
The reason it's unpainted is so the bolts and seals sit flat and even. Nothing to do with earth.
