What's the best way to check if your engine mounts are ok? My brother checked them and says they're fine (he asked me to hold the clutch on the biting point while he checked for engine movement) but i'm not convinced and I reckon this could be the cause of my new Mugen CAI rattling at low RPM only. My gearstick also moves quite a lot when coming on and off the throttle, is this normal?

If I was to get Mugen mounts would I notice more vibrations from the engine coming into the car?

i have cusco mounts,my engine is really solid,no movement at all, dunno how to check them though,i suppose just give the engine a pull and see for movement?more vibrations in the cabin yes

if your gear stick is moving then yes u have a ****ed mount. and that is the way u cheak them. hand brake on and get it on the bite and jurk the clutch and the engine will jump backwords or forwords.civics have soft mounts anyway.

Thanks guys, found out today my rear mount is completely f****ed. Where's the best place to buy one from? Side ones seem fine.

Any idea of the Honda part number for the rear mount?

i replaced all five mounts on my EK4 a month ago with Spoon mounts. took me around 5 hours ( i'm not a mechanic ) to complete the job with the valuable help of a workshop manual. i was a bit disappointment initially because there were a lot of vibrations in the cabin and all sorts of stuff were rattling that i was previously unaware of. however, after careful thought i realised part of the problem was that i didn't use a torque wrench. it is very important that the bolts which goes through the brackets/mounts are at the correct values. failing to do this cause excessive amounts of vibration. i got my hands on the correct tool and a week later, i loosened and retorqued each bolt accurately and it has contributed significantly to driving comfort. the cabin still vibrates a little on cold starts on mornings but is minimal when idling after it fully warms up. after, i no longer get any wheel hop and the clutch feel more direct. it is not as unforgiving as a rigid mounts, there is still SOME engine movement. my gear selection is smoother and the gearstick no longer rocks back and forth either when revving or coming up off the accel when driving. i would also add that having taken a close look as well as photos of each of the mounts side by side, i can see that the centre hole on the gearbox and rear mounts have been relocated slightly lower about 5mm. maybe this has done in an effort to move the centre of mass of the engine & gearbox down.

I'm going to replace the rear mount with an OEM Honda part for now, can't really afford to spend much more on it (yet). Needs fixing asap too as I can't drive it hard in its current state:(

I've spent over 1k on it recently, on new refurbed stock alloys, Mugen air filter, Mugen Twinloop cat back and already had plans to replace the exhaust manifold.

I'm sure Spoon engine mounts are great, but they'll have to wait.

from what i have experienced, whenever one mount goes, the others deteriorate in short order especially in the case of a bad rear mount. while your under the car, check the two lower front torque mounts. they dont take any insults.

Got the OEM Honda rear mount, shall I fill the gaps with silicone or just fit it as it is?

just fit it as it is, don't see any point "modifying" the mounts to make them stiffer, stiffer mounts are made with stiffer materials and not "filled" so not sure about the reliability if you were to fill them

out of interest, how much were you for just the rear mount?

£90 from Honda, it was either that or £70 ish from Bernard_28 (overseas genuine Honda parts ebay seller). I normally go with Bernard but I wanted it asap.

hmmm when you see the price of £240 for a full set of 5 Spoon engine mounts it doesn't seem so bad then!

Yeah from what I've read, it's the rear one that takes the most hammer too. Hopefully they won't need replacing again while i'm the owner.

sometimes there is only 1 or 2 mounts broken, there are 5 in total.

I recommend OEM mounts as they provide best overall performance vs comfort.

Having your mounts too stiff would just create vibrations and engine choking over bumps..I alrady have SPOON engine torque damper + stock mounts and thats already given me enough vibrations.
