BARC VTEC Challenge – 2012 Season Preview

2012 see’s the welcome return of the BARC’s “VTEC Challenge”, back for its 2nd year of competition and with a promise of another action packed season.

The series aims to continue providing the ideal route for drivers looking to make the move from track days to racing, as well as being a home to the more established racer.

For the season ahead the organisers have seen a considerable increase in registration’s from members of “HOT”, following in the footsteps of the likes of Rich Voaden, Mark Chese and Tim Blowers who all made the same move last season.

With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere among like minded Honda fans, newcomers to racing are made to feel welcome, and in relative safety quickly learn racing etiquette alongside other novices and more experienced drivers.

The VTEC Challenge prides itself on exemplary levels of driving standards, not often associated with the tin top race series.

To make getting on track even easier for 2012, “VTEC Challenge” organisers and Honda specialists “R-Motion” are offering race ready Integra Type R’s for sale.

The ‘98 spec JDM Integra Type R’s are built to meet the latest MSA regulations, and will be eligible to run in the “Production Class” of the series. Given the controlled specification, the Integra’s will be both competitive in class and remain evenly matched.

This also means that the results on track will be dependant on driver skill and not their budget. Prices for a turn key car start at £7500, and as they are still road legal they can be driven too and from the race track.

In addition to the cost of purchasing a car and the necessary safety equipment, each driver will need to register to become members of the series and the BARC.

These costs are:

1. 2012 series registration fee, which includes free membership to the VTEC Racing Club - £120.
2. 2012 BARC membership - as the races are BARC events, all competitors need to be BARC members - £110.

A normal race weekend involves 15 minutes of qualifying, plus two races of at least 15 minutes. Most races take place on one day, although some events will span both Saturday and Sunday.

The dates and locations for the year are as follows:

31st March/1st April Pembrey
19th May Oulton Park
10th June Silverstone
21st/22nd July Croft
25th/26th August Snetterton
30th September Mallory Park
20th/21st October Donington Park

The final event being held at Donington will be a new and exciting “Ultimate All Comers” event, where any race prepared Honda will be able to take to the track and battle for top honours.

For this event, as long as the driver holds a National A or B license, and is a member of an MSA approved club, they will be eligible to bring their Honda along and take part.

All modifications are free, and on this one occasion forced induction will be allowed. The only stipulation is that the tyres should be of the list 1b variety in order to provide an element of fairness to all taking part.

Confirmed regulations for this “one off” event will be available on the VTEC Challenge website in due course, and it’s hoped that Honda’s from all other UK/European series will take part in this exciting end to the season. It truly promises to be one not to miss for the fan of the screaming VTEC.

Following a revision of the regulations for 2012 there are now 4 new classes.

1600 Production - Up to 1600cc Production* 1600cc cars with limited modifications.
Production - 1800cc - 2300cc Production* cars (1.8cc-2.3cc) with limited modifications.
Tuner - Up to 1800cc Heavily Modified/Engine swapped cars** up to 1800cc
Super Tuner Over 1800cc Heavily Modified/Engine swapped cars** over 1800cc and minimum weight 1000kgs

*Production - Cars not exceeding engine capacity of the maximum engine size originally fitted to that chassis type (e.g. EK - 1.6, DC2 1.8, EP3 2.0). Engine modifications free but must retain OEM Honda pistons and run a single plenum throttle body (i.e. no individual throttle bodies)

**Heavily Modified/Engine swapped cars. Cars fitted with engines exceeding the capacity of maximum engine size originally fitted to that chassis type (e.g. EG B18, K20 EK, H22 DC2) OR cars with engine modifications not permitted in Production classes (e.g. forged engines)

For 2012, (with the exception of the event at Donington) no forced induction will be allowed, unless fitted from the factory.

Yokohama are again backing the series, and providing the control tyre (the A048) for the entrants. Following last years performance, the tyre has proven to be a great all rounder, with superb wear levels across all classes.

Other sponsors for 2012 include “HEL” Brake Lines, “VTEC Direct”, “Hendy Performance”, “R-Motion”, “Petrona’s Oil” and the series media partner “Total Honda”.

With a straightforward class structure, events at some of the best circuits in the UK and huge support from the Honda community, the VTEC Challenge continues to offer safe, friendly and cost effective racing for drivers of all experience levels.
