A friend and I have just bought a little Eunos Roadster as a bit of a project between us. We paid £400 in total but a couple of downsides to paying that price is the paintwork being in a terrible condition (lacquer peeling off everywhere) and the thing doesn't start lol. It will start and run perfectly when bumped but otherwise you get nothing from it. It appears that the starter motor is probably the cause but I also found out it has an aftermarket immobiliser fitted. Is there anyway this could cause it not to start unless bump started?

Thought I'd ask on here as I know people here generally know what their talking about!

Thanks a lot

could do mate, prob starter or alternator good thing is parts are cheap for them

Does it turn over at all? just click? is turning over slow?

Sounds like starter or bad earth to it.

It doesn't turn over at all, the only noise you get is the fuel pump priming. I think its the starter but not sure how immobilisers work if I'm honest. Do they cut the fuel, the ignition, or the starter motor? Or does it vary depending on the immobiliser? lol

It depends on what circuit the immoiliser is attatched to so yes it can vary. You could always check to see if there is power going to the starter when the key is turned and whether the earth is properly earthed with a multimeter. Would be quite quick and easy to find out!

I think I'll give this a go tomorrow, thanks!

The immobiliser uses like a proximity tag thingy on the key ring to automatically disarm the immobiliser so I guess its possible that this no longer works. I've also found the code to temp disarm it so I will give that a go too

Find Barry Spiers on there, tell him Lee sent you. He will sort your issue

was just thinkn about this and i no mine has an immobliser on it and if i dnt disarm it before i put the key in mine doesnt even turn over, dash lights come on and thats it then when i disarm it away it goes

Thanks Lee, Barry said I can give him a ring and he'll see what he can do to help.

I'll update this thread aswell as I guess its not really an MX-5 specific problem and could apply to most cars.

I've taken the dash and steering column apart and found the immobiliser. It looks like it is wired into the ignition wire, the battery wire and the starter wire. Have to say it looks like its been installed by a bit of a cowboy. The wires have been twisted together with a tiny bit of solder and then wrapped in electrical tape and the battery wire looks like it was cut twice and then crimped back together again.

Because its been wired to the starter wire then surely this means that if it was faulty or immobilised then it would just cause the starter to not receive a signal so would mean it could still be bump started? (possibly like yours kellsled)

I will see if I can use a multi meter to test the voltage on the wires before the immobiliser (to test the ignition/starter switch) and then after the immobiliser (to test the immobiliser) and then at the starter motor solenoid to see if its the starter motor/ solenoid. I will also just double check the battery by testing that too.

Does that sound like a good plan? Does anyone know of anything else to try?

Also since I want to remove the immobiliser anyway, do you think I could just rip it out and then join the 3 original wires back together again?

I have a 1990 Mazda right hand drive was running perfectly and now just will not start, brand new battery. It makes no sounds at all. There is a fuse I seen #80 that is broken could that be the problem? Thanks Lynda
